Madame Hydra Ophelia Sarkissian who operated as Viper concocted a plan to invade the Serpent Society from within, and use its members to dump a mutagenic toxin into the drinking water of Washington D.C. To that end, she recruited Fer-de-Lance, Black Racer, Puff Adder, Copperhead, Coachwhip, Boomslang, Rock Python, and Slither to help her with this goal. (Captain America v1 #342) Whilst the others having already infiltrated the Society, Coachwhip and her team invaded the Serpent Society's Citadel from the outside. (Captain America v1 #341) Fer-de-Lance and Coachwhip located Diamondback Rachel Leighton and Sidewinder in the Citadel's communications room, but Diamondback managed to knock Fer-de-Lance out. Rather than face Coachwhip, Diamondback activated Sidewinder's cloak and teleported herself and Sidewinder away. Viper set Puff Adder and Coachwhip to stand guard over the four Serpents who would not follow Viper, and succeeded in convincing Cottonmouth to join them. However, Diamondback and the Captain came to the rescue of the others, and Coachwhip was knocked out. (Captain America v1 #342)
Later on, Cobra accepted a commission from the Deviant leader Ghaur and the Atlantean Llyra to retrieve items of arcane mystic power. Thus, he split the Society into squads with Anaconda, Black Mamba, Rock Python, and Coachwhip went to Lima, Ohio, where an American Indian totem was buried. When members of the X-Men investigated the teams fought one-on-one, Rogue came to fight with a crack-the-whip against Coachwhip. Ultimately, the X-Men retrieved the item and the serpents were forced to return home empty-handed. (Uncanny X-Men Annual v1 #13)
With Puff Adder and Rock Python, Coachwhip attempted to steal Sam Wilson's Falcon suit. However, Battlestar intervened, giving Falcon time to don his costume, and he quickly knocked out Coachwhip. (Captain America v1 #355) Coachwhip was present at a Serpent Society meeting when Cobra announced that a mystery man had teleported into the Society's Bronx headquarters. Cobra asked the group to keep an ear out for information about the stranger. (Captain America v1 #365)
