Biography

Coulson and his team in S.H.I.E.L.D. v3 #1.

Phil Coulson was a male human who was born in the modern age.

Whilst in the U.S. Army, he came to meet a fellow recruit named Marcus Johnson with the two being close friends. The pair came to be deployed in Afghanistan where they served together and fought the Taliban. The conflict escalated during the events of Fear Itself when the power of the Serpent affected the world. (Battle Scars v1 #1)

Coulson came to date a K Street lobbyist named Lola Daniels who unknown to him was a telepathic spy sent by the Department of Defense. During their time together, she came to extract information from Coulson's mind on how to potentially defeat numerous major superheroes due to Phil's expertise on superhumans. Lola would later break up with Coulson before marriage once her mission had been fulfilled. All of the intel extracted from Coulson's mind was eventually used to create the Quantum Drive. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #2)

He was later brought into Director Johnsons Secret Avengers unit where he conducted the briefing of Hawkeye and the Black Widow Natasha Romanoff in order to recruit them into the covert-mission team. (Secret Avengers v2 #1) Afterwards, he conducted the meeting with Taskmaster after S.H.I.E.L.D. had freed the mercenary from his prison on Bagalia. (Secret Avengers v2 #2) The Secret Avengers initiative continued even after Maria hill came to be the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. where Agent Coulson was sent to recruit James Rhodes into the operation. (Secret Avengers v2 #6) Afterwards, the planet was invaded by the forces of the Mad Titan Thanos with this event seeing the detonation of the Terrigen Bomb that activated the Inhuman genes amongst the human populace. As a result, a number of people gained superpowers due to one of their ancestors having been an Inhuman. Among them was S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sarah Garza who was used as a superhuman operative with her being sent alongside Agent Coulson and Fury to fight the alien invaders. (Secret Avengers v2 #10) They were then besieged upon by a newly activated Inhuman who had power over technology and metal with him blaming superheroes for the constant damage to the world. Coulson and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team managed to regroup where they attempted to calm the Inhuman Gavrel in order for him to stand down. However, he refused and attacked Nick Fury, Jr. with Agent Coulson attempting to save his friend. Ultimately, Sarah Garza entered into the fray where she disarmed Gavrel but then he was shot in the head by Fury in order to neutralise the threat posed by the man. (Secret Avengers v2 #11)

Coulson reached out to his former fiancée Lola Daniels after discovering she was attached to a project stolen from the Pentagon by a mysterious person wearing a counterfeit Iron Man Armor. The project turned out to be a database named the Quantum Drive which contained highly sensitive plans on how to take out every super hero on Earth. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1) This data created was actually the information stolen from Coulson's knowledge of super heroes, retrieved directly from his mind years ago by Lola using her secret telepathic powers. In order to atone for her past actions, and because the Department of Defense did not want it in the wrong hands either, Lola helped Coulson learn the time and date when an auction for the Quantum Drive was going to be held. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #2) Once his agents investigated the place of the auction, Barbuda, Coulson infiltrated the island posing as Wolverine. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #3) While the D.O.D.'s operative John Walker won the auction, Coulson stole the drive from him and his agents got their hands on it. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #4) However, Coulson was immediately attacked and captured by the counterfeit Iron Man, who turned out to be Coulson's former partner Grant Ward, and now an agent of Hydra. Ward additionally kidnapped Lola, and forced her to extract once again the information used to make the Axiom Protocols so they could be replicated. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #5) While Hydra launched several attacks on super heroes using more knock-off Iron Man suits funded with the profit from the auction, Coulson escaped imprisonment and attempted to stop Ward and his master, Gorgon. Coulson and Lola were soon rescued by Coulson's agents and several super heroes. Ward and Gorgon were eventually defeated, but Lola was killed in the middle of the battle. This incident involving the Axiom Protocols also damaged the trust between Coulson and his team, as they realized Coulson hadn't merely thought of protocols against super heroes, but also his closest allies. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #6)

Upon his return, he operated as the Agent that worked on behalf of the U.S. government in the time when S.H.I.E.L.D. had been disbanded. He was charged with assembling a super-powered team that would oversee U.S. interests leading to him gathering the Squadron Supreme of America. (Avengers v8 #10)

Coulson later went to his local comic shop as he was a collector of comic books when he discovered someone spying on him. This turned out to be Taskmaster who managed to knock Coulson out but not before he could call Hyperion to save him. The Squadron Supreme member then managed to badly injure Taskmaster but the mercenary used an arrow containing Argonite radiation to weaken his foe and knock him out. Taskmaster then departed the scene as he was only trailing Coulson in order to get his kinesic signature for a mission. (Taskmaster v3 #2)
