History
The Protoss were created on the planet Aiur by the Xel'Naga, who granted them much technology. However, the Protoss became warlike, and rebelled, forcing the Xel'Naga to abandon them.
The Protoss later realized what they had become, and also realized that the Xel'Naga were right in abandoning them. They reunited all of their tribes under the leadership of the Conclave (except the Dark Templars, who refused to submit and were exiled), and made the Protoss Empire. Over time, the Conclave became very domineering and tradition-bound.
At some point, the Conclave ordered a series of experiments into robotics and making mental clones of their warriors.
