Dana Barrett was Louis Tully's neighbor across the hall in the infamous Shandor Building in New York. She had a job as a cellist in a New York City orchestra an was constantly being stalked by Louis. She contacted the Ghostbusters after one afternoon in her apartment, eggs popped out of their carton and began frying on her countertop and she heard horrendous growling noises coming from inside of her refrigerator which she opened to notice a fiery mythic temple on which a Terror Dog sat and roared the word "Zuul" in an unearthly voice.

On the night she and Peter Venkman had arranged to meet and discuss her case she noticed a bright light and what seemed like paws protruding from her kitchen door and suddenly found herself attacked by demonic claws bursting through her sofa. Dana was pinned to her chair by the claws as it slid toward the kitchen door which had burst open revealing Zuul the Gatekeeper, one of Gozer's two Terror Dogs, growling ferociously at her as she screamed in horror.

Under Zuul's possession, Dana became much sexier and seductive than before. Trying aggressively to seduce Peter when he arrived for their date under the false impression that he was the Keymaster, who ironically possessed her stalkerish neighbor, Louis. After a frustrating time trying to bed Peter she became enraged to the point that she(under Zuul's demonic control) began levitating off the bed, growling ferociously at him like a rabid Terror Dog. After being drugged by Peter, Dana woke up once the Ghostbusters firehouse exploded releasing all of the ghosts into New York City. As the ghosts approached her apartment Dana unleashed another unearthly roar which exploded her living room windows and left Vinz Clortho a path to follow towards her. After the Keymaster successfully arrived at her apartment, Dana took him into her arms and kissed him passionately before leading him up a mythical set of stairs toward to a demonic shrine atop their building where they proceeded to initiate their mating ritual. After consumating their union, Dana and Louis took Zuul and Vinz's ritual positions atop stone pedestals and were struck by lightning bolts shooting from the top of the temple opening the interdimensional portal through which Gozer could enter the human realm by redirecting the bolts at the portal doorway. Upon completion of the opening of the doorway both Dana and Louis transformed into the grotesque demonic forms of their possessors, Zuul and Vinz, growling monstruously before taking their places beside Gozer.
