Biography

Jellal Fernandes in Fairy Tail v1 #43.

Jellal Fernandes (Japanese: ジェラール・フェルナンデス, Hepburn: Jerāru Ferunandesu) was a male human who was born in the Earthlands. As a child, he was abducted by evil magicians where he was taken to the Tower of Heaven alongside similar children that were being used as slave labour in its construction. During this time, he came to be close friends to other children that included Shô, Simon, Wally and Millianna where he acted as a leader of their group. One day, they were joined by a new abductee who was a red-haired girl by the name of Erza who joined heir group. In this time, the two became close where he gave her the last name of Scarlet and vowed to escape the Tower. After a failed escape attempt, he came to believe he was possessed by the legendary Black Wizard Zeref with his former kind personality being overtaken b a more violent one as he fell completely insane. Erza was exiled from the island with the other prisoners made to believe that she abandoned them and he concocted the story that she had gone insane with her newfound magic powers where she destroyed the ships that were set to take the slaves off the island. Jellal then took control over the construction of the Tower of Heaven where he believed he was tasked with resurrecting Zeref who would bring in 'true freedom' in the world. As he was growing up, he went under the tutelage of Brain who taught Jellal some of his skill and magic that included the Square of Self-Destruction. Eventually, he created a thought projection persona called Siegrain that came to join the ranks of the Magic Council. At some point, Erza Scarlet came to encounter him where she thought Siegrain was Jellal but he claimed that he lied by saying he was his twin brother. As Siegrain, he and fellow council member Ultear Milkovich came to disagree with any attempt at leniency towards the Fairy Tail guild much to the annoyance of the other Council members present in the meeting. Later on, he was with the Magic Council where they discussed Fairy Tail's actions that saved everyone from Lullaby's terror. Siegrain argued that the Council should appreciate the guild's efforts though they continued to be frustrated by Fairy Tail's reckless behaviour. Around this time, the Council came to arrest Erza Scarlet for the destruction caused by her, Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster in the battle against Lullaby. Before meeting the Magic Council, Erza came to briefly meet Siegrain who reminded her that he was not his brother Jellal. He then joined the Council in prosecuting her over the incident where Siegrain developed an interest in Natsu's abilities. Afterwards, Siegrain plotted with Ultear to end her to Galuna Island where in the guise of 'Zalty' she helped Lyon Vastia in his plot to revive the demon Deliora so that he could control it. Ultimately though, it was found that the demon had long been dead which resulted in the mission being a failure. Following the incident, he was in a session of the Magic Council when they looked to punish Makarov Dreyar following Fairy Tail's recent conflict against their rival Phantom Lord guild.

Afterwards, Jellal looked to enact his plans at the Tower of Heaven where he dispatched Shô, Simon, Wally and Millianna to capture Erza in order to use her as a sacrifice for Zeref's resurrection. The group came to accomplishes their mission but Erza managed to break free from her restraints and fought against Jellal's followers. Meanwhile, as Siegrain, he came to convince the Magic Council that the Tower of Heaven was a threat and needed to be destroyed by the magic cannon Etherion. With Ultear's aid, they managed to convince most of the councillors to side with them with the weapon being deployed. This led to them falling into Jellal's trap as the Tower of Heaven was actually a giant magic absorbing Lacrima where Etherion's power would provide the structure the required 2.7 Billion Edeas necessary to bring Zeref back to life. At the Tower of Heaven, Jellal's plans also continued to go forward even though Simon and Shô had betrayed him though he was untroubled at this development. He continued to send his minions against her until she confronted him and seemingly gained the upper hand and was prepared to die alongside him when Etherion fired. She was then shocked to find out that the entire incident had been an elaborate plan to supply him the needed power to activate the R-System. Jellal was then seemingly possessed by the spirit of Zeref and revealed that Siegrain was simply his magical doppelganger where the two merged together. With his magic restored, he came to battle Erza where he came to overpower her leading to him restraining her with a spell. He would have her placed in the R-System with the intention of sacrificing her but was stopped by Natsu who arrived on the scene. Dragneel would challenge Jellal who gladly accepted where Fernandes remained unharmed despite repeated strikes against him. Despite that, it was Natsu's arrogance along with his acts of destruction against the Tower of Heaven which came to anger Jellal. This led to him deciding to unleash his most powerful attack against his foe with Erza attempting to shield her comrade using her own body. However, Simon would instead take the hit and died as a result of the attack though Jellal cared little about the death of his comrade calling him foolish and useless. This came to anger Natsu who decided to eat the broken pieces of the Eterion-infused Lacrima much to Jellal's shock with this allowing Dragneel to enter into the Dragon Force state. This gave him the necessary strength to fight Jellal and injure him forcing Fernandes to unleash powerful spells against his opponent only to be defeated when Natsu punched him into the Tower thus destroying it and the stored magic power within it. The act destroyed the Tower of Heaven which simply vanished into the air whilst the Fairy Tail guild along with other survivors were rescued from the area. Unknown to anyone, Jellal had survived and was not free from the influence of Zeref but left unconscious in the destroyed remains with him being presumed dead.

Later, Jellal, now in a comatose state due to absorbing the effects of the Etherion, ends up, through unknown means, in the hands of the Dark Guild and one-third of the Balam Alliance, the Oración Seis, whose leader, Brain, is an old acquaintance of his. Jellal was first seen again in a cross-shaped coffin, wrapped up in chains, as Brain makes Racer bring him to Wendy Marvell. Wendy mistakes Jellal for his Edolas counterpart, Mystogan, who once saved her life. Because of this — and having witnessed Brain wound Jellal's unconscious body — Wendy submits to Brain's thought of restoring Jellal, as Brain believes Jellal can lead the Oración Seis to the Magic they're after: Nirvana. Having been given five minutes to think it over, Wendy decides to do so, and Natsu arrives just in time to see Jellal restored and fully awakened. As soon as he sees Jellal, Natsu goes on the offensive, but is easily, and instantaneously, blown away by one of Jellal's spells. When Brain compliments Jellal on his power, Jellal turns around and causes the ground underneath Brain to collapse, sending him plummeting to the lower levels of the Oración Seis' base, before walking away. Now in the forest, having moved away from the Oración Seis' hideout, and having taken some clothes from a defeated Naked Mummy member where Jellal began to mutter Erza's name. He is later stalked by Cobra, who has been given orders by Brain to follow him, as he might be heading for Nirvana. Cobra ends up at a large tree, and when Jellal touches it, it causes a large pillar of black light to appear and a large tower to sprout from the ground; this being Nirvana's true form. Later, Erza manages to reach Jellal's position, and it is revealed that, due to the effects of Etherion, Jellal now suffers from amnesia; the only thing he outright remembers is Erza's name, and he pleads with her to tell him who that person was before the amnesia. Erza tells Jellal that she was Erza, and proceeds to explain who he is, and what he had done to his comrades. Angered, Erza declares that if Jellal can't remember such horrific deeds, then she'll strike her sword into his heart in an effort to force him to, causing Jellal to break down in tears, disgusted by the kind of person he was before in his life. It was then that Cobra appeared where he demanded to know how Jellal came to know about Nirvana. Jellal replies that he only activated Nirvana in order to destroy it, stating that such dangerous Magic can not fall into the hands of anyone, revealing that he cast the Square of Self-Destruction on the great Magic. Ignoring Cobra's cries of shock, Jellal tells Erza that he'll take away her possible hatred towards him by ending his life, revealing to have also put said Square of Self-Destruction on himself to free Erza from the pain he has caused her and her comrades. Just then, Brain appeared, and, having been informed of the situation by Cobra, calmly tells Jellal that it was he who invented the Square of Self-Destruction and taught it to him, subsequently nullifying the Magic without the need for the cancellation code. He mocks Jellal and unleashes Nirvana in all of its power, revealing its true form of a gargantuan, eight-legged, walking city.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Jellal Fernandes was a young male human who had blue hair and a red tattoo above and under his right eye that he had since his childhood. Using a thought projection, he created an alternate identity of Siegrain (ジークレイン Jīkurein) which he used to join the ranks of the Magic Council. After being a wanted fugitive, he came to adopt the identity of his Edolas counterpart and became the masked spellcaster known as Mystogan (ミストガン Misutogan).

As a young boy, he was shown to had been a kind and compassionate person who deeply cared about his friends. Even when he became a slave, he retained a cheerful and optimistic view.

For a time, he came to believe that he had been possessed by what he believed was the legendary Dark Mage Zeref. This came to supplant his former kind personality with a more violent one where he was driven almost completely insane. A consequence of this led to his obsession with rebuilding the R-System. Despite that, he came to treat the slaves much better to the point that they did not believe they were slaves. However, this was because they came to work better towards their goal when they were not feeling enslaved. Despite that, he cared little about their lives including those of his friends that he used to work alongside with in the Tower. This was seen when he was perfectly fine with their defeats and even the death of Simon did not phase him. Instead, he berated Simon where he called him foolish and useless after he had sacrificed his life to save Erza. Jellal's own relationship with Erza had also changed where he was even willing to sacrifice her life to accomplish his goals.

After his revival by Wendy Marvell, he began to suffer from amnesia where he came to be afraid of the world. In this time, he could not remember his own identity but did remember the names of Erza and Natsu Dragneel. Over time, he came to learn of the various sins he had committed in the past. This led to Jellal being overwhelmed by guilt where he wanted to die as he believed this was the only way he could atone for his actions. However, Erza came to convince him to keep on living so that he could find a way to past up for his past acts. After his capture by the Magic Council, he allowed himself to be arrested by the knights even when knowing that he would face the death penalty. Jellal was shown to had met his arrest by remaining calm and even happy. Mavis Verimillion would comment that Jellal held the the same kind of heart as those members of the Fairy Tail guild despite not being a member.

In his childhood, he came to meet Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレット Eruza Sukāretto) when both were slaves at the Tower of Heaven. He was the one who gave her the last name of Scarlet on account of her red hair. He had said that Erza's your words gave him courage. They became his light that would guide him towards the right path again.

Powers and abilities

Jellal Fernandes was a human who came to possess Magic Power (魔力 Maryoku) in his body. This allowed him to wield Magic (魔法 Mahō) and made him a Mage (魔導士 Madōshi). Such was his intelligence that he was able to master powerful spells even from a young age. In addition to his natural cleverness, he had a vast knowledge and deep understanding of the Magic world with him being aware of powerful spells. Through magic, he could perform telekinetic feats whereby he could move objects around in the air without touching them. For defence, he could conjure hexagonal barriers to protect himself and others from attacks as powerful as those made by the dragon Acnologia. As a mage, he was able to control his magic power and learnt Heavenly Body Magic (天体魔法 Tentai Mahō) that was based around astronomical objects, such as meteors, stars and black holes. Jellal was able to generate and manipulate the energies of stars from his body that he used against his enemies. He possessed vast amounts of Magic Power that were enough for him to be admitted into the ranks of the Ten Wizard Saints which consisted of the most powerful mages in the Earth Lands.

He came to develop a number of magical techniques that included:

  • Thought Projection (思念体 Shinentai) :
  • Bind Snake (拘束の蛇バインドスネーク Baindo Sunēku) :
  • Flame of Rebuke (咎の炎 Toga no Honō) :
  • Meteor (流星ミーティア Mītia) : this spell allowed him to surround his body in a cloak of Heavenly Body Magic giving him the ability to move through the air at incredible speeds. Such was his skill that even foes able to detect him were unable to respond in time to counter him. Using this ability, he was able to assault his foes quickly and with powerful melee attacks. He was known to make use of a special suit under his robes in order to use this spell more effectively.
  • Grand Chariot (七星剣 グランシャリオ Guran Shario) : used when in the air where the spellcaster placed both arms on top of each other with the top hand having only the index along with middle fingers spread out. Once done, seven magic seals were summoned in front of him with them connecting in the pattern of a constellation. The seals then released a powerful blast of light against an enemy with them forming the same pattern on the ground before exploding. According to Jellal, the strength of this destructive spell was said to rival that of an actual meteor.
  • Pleiades (六連星 プレアデス Pureadesu) : a signature stance whereby Jellal called forth six rays of light that fell from the sky which struck at his target in consecutive strikes.
  • Jiu Leixing (九雷星キュウライシン Kyūraishin) :
  • Altairis (暗黒の楽園アルテアリス Arutearisu) : a spell whereby Jellal crossed his arms above his head with it drawing all nearby shadows to him where it formed a small black orb where it rapidly grew in size that was fired at a target. The orb seemed to be incredibly dense and held incredible amounts of gravity capable of crushing everything in its path.
  • Abyss Break (煉獄砕破アビスブレイク Abisu Bureiku) :
  • True Heavenly Body Magic: Sema (真・天体魔法 星崩しセーマ Shin Tentai Mahō Sēma) :
  • Square of Self-Destruction (自律崩壊魔法陣 Jiritsu Hōkai Mahōjin) :

As Mystogan, he came to employ some of the techniques of the other which involved the use of magic staves. These included:

  • Five Layered Magic Circle: Sacred Song (五重魔法陣 御神楽, Gojūmahōjin: Mikagura) :
  • Three Layered Magic Circle: Mirror Water (三重魔法陣 鏡水, Sanjūmahōjin: Kyōsui) :

Looking to redeem himself, he came to be the co-founder of Crime Sorcière (魔女の罪クリムソルシエール Kurimu Sorushiēru) that were an independent guild whose aim was to eradicate all evil brought about by Dark Guilds and Zeref, with the members seeking redemption for the crimes and atrocities they committed in their past.
