Biography

Pre-Crisis

Supergirl Kara Zor-El in Action Comics v1 #252.

Kara was the daughter of the scientist Zor-El from the planet Krypton. A tragedy came to their world when it faced a cataclysm that caused it to explode but a city on the surface was blown into space where it survived. Among the Kryptonians in this fragment was Zor-El who continued to live as a food machine maintained their lives. Initially, their lives came to be threatened when the explosion of their homeworld had started to convert the rock beneath the city to had been converted to Kryptonite. To survive, they made use of sections composed of lead that shielded them from the fatal radiation allowing them to continue living in this fragment of their home planet. During this time, Zor-El got married with him and his wife having a daughter they named Kara. Their city later came upon a meteor storm whose collisions on the city damaged the lead shield causing the fatal radiation to begin to affect the population once more. Thus, Zor-El sought a means to save his daughter and determined that his brother Jor-El had shielded his own son by sending him to the planet Earth where he developed super-powers. They observed the now adult Superman on his adoptive home planet and that he had superpowers with him being a protector for the world. Thus, Zor-El and his wife decided to send Kara on a rocket ship to that planet just before the radiation affected the remaining Kryptonians on the city. Kara was launched with her becoming an orphan as she believed her people had died with her rocket landing on Earth where she encountered her cousin Superman. Unable to keep her with him, Superman decided to create a life for her as a human with her orchestrating a disguise for her and Kara adopting the secret indentity of Linda Lee with her being taken in by the Midvale Orphanage. This time was used for her to get used to her new abilities and learnt to be human whilst she operated as Supergirl who patrolled the town of Midvale. (Action Comics v1 #252)

Supergirl met Batgirl for first time when Mister Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite threw them into a dangerous alternate dimension to get them out of the way as they pulled a prank on Superman and Batman. After several days they managed to break the dimensional barrier just in time to save their mentors from being blasted into another dimension. Both girls befriended each other during their adventure, and would team up more times throughout the years. (World's Finest v1 #169)

One day a sword-wielding sorceress named Nightflame teleported in San Francisco and started tearing the city up, looking for Supergirl. Kara hurried to engage her, but she was easily defeated and transported to a demon-filled Hell dimension called Innerverse. Nightflame revealed that place was spawned by Supergirl's darkest side but was decaying. In order to prevent this, Nightflame intended to erase Supergirl's consciousness and taking over her body. With considerably effort, Kara broke Nightflame's binding spell and managed to take her down. (Adventure Comics v1 #421)

The days of Linda working as a photographer came to an end when she wrote several pieces exposing a crime syndicate. Though her informer got cold feet and later got murdered by the syndicate. Kara took the Frisco syndicate down, but she blamed herself for her informer's death. She decided her job was compromising her morals and that was unacceptable, so she quit. (Adventure Comics v1 #424)

Later on, her cousin Superman came to be missing with Supergirl deciding to seek out the Justice League of America for aid. This saw her going to the Justice League Watchtower in orbit where she found Green LanternHal Jordan unconscious after being ambushed by his enemy Sonar. Kara then broke into the Watchtower to fight the villain who had seemingly defeated the other members of the Justice League before escaping back to Earth's surface. She then learnt that they had been acting as part of a ruse to uncover the villain's plans where they went to stop him with Supergirl joining them. After his defeat, the Earth came under attack from Queen Bee and her armies where Supergirl helped in defeating her. With the threat over, she then requested the League's help in finding her missing cousin. (Justice League of America v1 #132) She, however, was not impressed when it turned the Leaguers out not only had no idea where her cousin was but also spent one hour doing nothing to find their teammate or identify their mysterious enemy. (Justice League of America v1 #133) As searching Superman, Supergirl, the Leaguers and Despero were abducted by the last survivors of an alien race named the Krill who wanted to see the heroes and the villain fighting as a way to abate their boredom. Every time it looked like several Leaguers were about to defeat Despero, the Krills swapped combatants and changed the arena. Then Supergirl tricked them into betting on the outcome and punched Despero out. As the Krills fought against each other, the Leaguers got Superman back, subdued Despero and flew off. (Justice League of America v1 #134)

As Superman was getting obsessed with the demise of Krypton to the point of courting a psychological breakdown, the Kandorians approached Kara and persuaded her that the best way to help Kal-El was to remove the trouble by making him believe Krypton never existed and was a delusion of his. When Superman's fear to lose his adoptive world led him to commit acts of eco-terrorism. (Superman v1 #307)

Following years of failures, Superman and Supergirl came to find a way to enlarge the Bottle City of Kandor. After a battle against Brainiac, both cousins relocated the city to Rokyn that was a planet which orbited by a red sun, where they enlarged Kandor to its normal size. In that time, Kara's parents decided to settle on Rokyn that became a new home for the Kryptonian survivors. (Superman v1 #338)

Superman would come to ask for Kara's help to stop the tyrannical alien warlord Mongul who had stolen a key to control Warworld that was a mobile, star-sized weaponized satellite. The two Kryptonians were unable to prevent Mongul from taking control of Warworld but did manage to destroy it. Kara was responsible for hurling herself at it at incalculable speed and piercing it like a bullet, and Kal making the planet turn its weapons on itself. (DC Comics Presents v1 #28)

At the height of the war between the Legion and Darkseid, Kara got a Legion alarm. Supergirl time-travelled to the future and faced up to Darkseid alongside with her cousin. Even though their powers had been amped up by Izaya and Supergirl laid a beat down on him, Darkseid almost killed them. Yet she kept Darkseid busy while the Legion regrouped and ruined his plans. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #294)

During the battle, the Anti-Monitor looked to kill Superman with Kara confronting the cosmic supervillain. This saw her destroying her foe's reality killing machines and nearly pummelling her opponent to death. However, a distraction was provided by Dr. Light allowed the Anti-Monitor to strike her down. The mortally wounded Kara then died in her cousin's arms where she was mourned by all the heroes of the world with Batgirl giving a eulogy in her name. (Crisis on Infinite Earths v1 #4)

Post-Crisis

Kara returns in Superman/Batman v1 #13.

Following the Crisis of Infinite Earths, the Kara Zor-El Supergirl was removed from continuity. Instead, there were other characters that took on the identity of Supergirl including; Matrix, Linda Danvers, and Cir-El.

Her father Zor-El listened to Jor-El's warnings of the impending doom of Krypton and constructed an escape ship for his daughter Kara with its navigation being keyed to follow her cousin Kal-El's craft. Kara's ship got caught in the destruction of Krypton with her being kept in a state of suspended animation as its journey to follow its target ship was delayed. (Superman/Batman v1 #9) Whilst there, she was corrupted by Darkseid and came to see Apokolips as her home with its ruler as her master. When Superman came to rescue her, Kara turned on him and attacked him on behalf of Darkseid. (Superman/Batman v1 #11)

After awakening from her pod, she found herself in Gotham City where she was unfamiliar with the language or the people leaving her in a confused state as her powers began to manifest. She was found by Batman who used Kryponite to render her unconscious as he took her to the Batcave where she met with Superman who learnt that Kara was his cousin. (Superman/Batman v1 #8) Kara was then taken to the Fortress of Solitude in order to adjust to her new home though Batman did not trust her and intended to run more tests on her as he doubted her version of events. (Superman/Batman v1 #9) She was then taken to Themyscira against the wishes of Superman where Wonder Woman had her train with the Amazons. During this time, she went through weeks of combat training under Artemis whilst also making friends such as Harbinger. At this time, forces from Apokolips struck with an army of animate Doomsdays being deployed to fight the Amazons whilst a secondary force captured Kara for Darkseid. (Superman/Batman v1 #10) Whilst there, she was brainwashed by Darkseid to be his enforcer and he commanded her to attack her cousin Superman when he came to rescue her. She was defeated by the Man of Steel and Darkseid was forced to abandon his claim to her when Batman threatened to detonate Hellspores on Apokolips. Upon returning to Earth, she learnt of Harbingers death and adjusted to life on her new home with her getting a costume made by Martha Kent. As Supergirl, she went to the Kent Farm in Smallville with Superman only for them to be ambushed by Darkseid who targeted the Man of Steel. To protect her cousin, Kara went into the path of an Omega Beam where she was seemingly disintegrated. (Superman/Batman v1 #12) In reality, she was transported away at the last second by the Justice League to fake her death to allow Kara to decide if she wanted to live an ordinary life or become a superhero. She ultimately decided she wanted to become a hero with her telling her cousin who proudly introduced her to the other heroes of the Earth with her taking the name Supergirl. (Superman/Batman v1 #13)

Zatanna went to Themyscira for refuge after quitting the JLA and talked to Supergirl. Supergirl revealed that she was not entirely happy as she wanted to meet boys and use her powers as a heroine, but she first had to gain Superman and Batman’s trust before she could leave Themyscira. (JLA v1 #118) A covert new JLA tried to recruit Supergirl into their ranks. She knew Wonder Woman had reservations about the current state of the JLA, and wanted to consult her mentor, but Green Arrow convinced her they were friends. Their discussion ended when they were attacked by O.M.A.C.s bent on destroying all superhumans. The O.M.A.C.s were overwhelmed and chose to self-destruct. Troia appeared in Metropolis to reintroduce herself to the heroes, and let them know about the Infinite Crisis in space. She needed all the help she could get, and Red Tornado and Supergirl joined her to fly into space. (JLA v1 #123)

As a result of the Zeta Beam, Kara re-appeared in the 31st century. She was revered as a member of the Superman family. Upon her arrival, she concluded that she was 'dreaming' the Legion and that the 31st century was not real. Saturn Girl, attempting to learn more about how Kara arrived in their era, scanned Kara's mind and found a particularly vivid memory -- that of the Zeta Beam accident. (Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes v1 #16)

Whilst finding her place on Earth, she went to the Justice Society during a battle with Solomon Grundy in order to meet with Supergirl. However, Power Girl's powers went out of control as both her and Kara were the same person occupying the same space in time causing them to act out against one another. (Supergirl v5 #1) She then went to Smallville to the Kent Farm to meet with Superboy who went into self-imposed isolation and reacted aggressively to Kara's arrival with the Teen Titans arriving leading to a misunderstanding that resulted in a fight. (Supergirl v5 #2) Starfire later informed her that they discovered that it was Lex Luthor that was spying on her leading to Kara being with the Outsiders for a brief time before confronting the supervillain. Luthor ended up beating her and used black Kryptonite on Kara leading to the creation of an evil duplicate known as Dark Supergirl. (Supergirl v5 #3)

Following a discussion with Owen Mercer, she decided to attempt to create a secret identity for herself and started enrolling at high school where he took the name Claire Connor who was a teenage girl from Kansas. To complete her disguise, she used a wig, glasses and plain clothes to appear as an ordinary human being. Despite her attempts, she failed to assimilate because she was unable to connect with the other students leading to her dropping out after a week due to the actions of cruel classmates. (Supergirl v5 #10)

Supergirl then assisted Superman and the Green Lantern Corps in tracking down an invading alien armada back to their home galaxy. Kara made use of tesseract technology to follow them, but ultimately a solar flare distracted her senses, and she was unable to determine the aliens' point of origin. She returned to her home to report her failure, but Superman was still proud of her efforts. (Supergirl v5 #23)

Supergirl saved Vril Dox from his extraterrestrial pursuers, and he explained that he was formerly the head of intergalactic police force L.E.G.I.O.N. before being usurped. Vril Dox received a subspace transmission warning him to flee, and further directing him to go to Earth, locate Supergirl, and speak the word "cephalophore" to her. Vril spoke the mnemonic trigger, and her heat-vision activated, burning code into a blank CD he held in front of her. He decoded the disc, which gave schematics, and told Supergirl the tech he needed to build it. She couldn't help but feel she was being manipulated, but she was curious about who implanted code into her head. They went to an Antarctic science station so Vril could build the device, and it was a message from the 31st century from his descendant Brainiac 5. Brainiac said he'd put data in Supergirl's head before she left the Legion because he had no intention of Vril being the last of their great house. There were no further records of Vril from the 31st Century archives, so Brainiac sent him files on the Legion of Super-Heroes so he could construct the perfect team, and said Supergirl would be an excellent first choice. The bounty hunters found them, and Vril asked Amon what happened to him, a former honored member of L.E.G.I.O.N., and Amon said Vril ruined his life like he ruined everything he touched. Vril dodged Amon's plasma blast, which hit Getorix, killing him. Vril realized Getorix was controlling the monstrous Tribulus with a cranial implant, so he removed it, and had Supergirl implant it in him with her heat vision. Vril had Tribulus knock out Supergirl, saying he had no further use for her, and flew off with Tribulus in tow. Brainiac yelled at him for going off plan, and Vril said he preferred an unquestioning and unmerciful asset like Tribulus over the willful Supergirl, and deactivated his connection to Brainiac 5. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v1 #2)

Congorilla later called upon her help where she helped assist the new Justice League following when the mystical force of the Starheart had corrupted a number of heroes including Power Girl causing her to run amok. Kara was able to stop her alternate world counterpart and was asked to help assist in the crisis. (Justice League of America v2 #45) Thus, she was invited into the ranks of the new Justice League of America in responding to various crises around the world. (Justice League of America v2 #46)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events. Kara Zor-El

After several months of endless battles during which Kara never dealt with her survivor guilt and feelings of loss and loneliness, and believing she had been manipulated, betrayed or let down by everybody she met, Kara was on the verge of a breakdown. (Supergirl v6 #26)

With her powers unstable, she had joined the Department of Extranormal Operations where Director Cameron Chase offered to restore her abilities in exchange for her aiding the agency in its missions. The mission was successful with Supergirl helping to defeat Lar-On who had emerged from a tear in the Phantom Zone. To maintain her civilian life, she was given the identity of Kara Danvers with agents Eliza Danvers and Jeremiah Danvers operating as her foster parents. In her civilian life, she was meant to live an ordinary life whilst operating as Supergirl at National City. (Supergirl: Rebirth v1 #1)

She later received a signal from the Fortress of Solitude and came to assist her cousin Superman along with Batman against the Infected. These were all heroes corrupted by the Batman Who Laughs who was looking to acquire six people with unique energies so that he could open a doorway into the Dark Multiverse. This was so that he could corrupt the entire world and drive them to his madness. The last person he required was Superman himself who managed to evade the Batman Who Laughs but Kara was accidentally struck and turned into a dark version of herself as one of the new Secret Six. (Batman/Superman v2 #4)
