History

Travelling through the Bifrost in Avengers Prime v1 #2.

It served as a way of connecting distant Asgard with that of Earth. (Journey into Mystery v1 #349) At some point, Hela was said to had used her magic to hide the bridge from the Asgardians. It was during this time that she forged an alliance with the greater demon king Skald in order to invade Asgard through Midgard. To stop them, Thor made a perilous crossing to Midgard where he aided a tribe of Vikings that were being attacked by the demons. (Thor: Wolves of the North v1 #1)

Upon freeing himself from his prison in a tree, Loki used the Rainbow Bridge to go to Earth in order to battle his brother Thor. (Journey into Mystery v1 #349)

During the Siege, the forces of Norman Osborn struck at Heimdall's observatory leading to it being heavily damaged and in a state of ruin. Whilst checking the damage, the rainbow bridge activated which sent Thor Odinson, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers split among the Nine Realms. (Avengers Prime v1 #1)

When the Serpent was freed, the world fell into the grip of the events of Fear Itself with the Avengers battling Skadi of the Worthy. After her forces were defeated, she used the power from the ruined observatory to teleport away from the scene. (Avengers v4 #17)

A Roxxon Energy Corporation scientist by the name of Karver was looking into creating an artificial version of the Bifrost Bridge but was killed by Black Ant. (Illuminati v1 #2)

The Mangog in his quest for revenge against Odin decided to strike at Asgardia where he arrived on the Rainbow Bridge and brutally beat Heimdall after which he shattered the Bifrost. (Mighty Thor v1 #703)

A fragment of the Bifrost was obtained by Angela and used to power a spacecraft giving it interstellar travel capabilities allowing for her along with her team of Asgardians to stop Nebula from acquiring the Naglfar Armada. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #1) To aid Odin, King T'Challa dispatched John Jameson of the Agents of Wakanda for the task of recovering the broken shards of the bridge so that they could work to reassemble it. (Avengers v8 #12) Heimdall himself sought to restore the Rainbow Bridge by the time the War of the Realms came to Earth in order to give forces of Midgard an advantage over the Dark Council. To that end, he confiscated the fragment of it that was powering the interstellar drive of the Asgard's Reach that was being used by Angela. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #8) The Rainbow Bridge was then restored but Heimdall's sight was still affected which meant he could not serve as its guardian. This led to Daredevil volunteering to take the role as he took Heimdall's sword and was transformed into the God Without Fear. With his new god power, he could open the Bifrost allowing for Earth's heroes to respond to the invasion with them being transported to various sites. This included responding to Malekith's attack in England, sending a rescue team to Jotunheim to save Thor and to dispatch a strike force to destroy Malekith's Black Bifrost. However, the Dark Elves learnt of the Bifrost's restoration and sent forth saboteurs who used swamp bombs to destroy it once again. This forced Freyja's strike force being forced to defend the Black Bifrost as it was the only means of transporting their forces with the armies of the Dark Elves attempting to reclaim it. (War of the Realms v1 #3)

Overview

In appearance, the multi-hued bridge resembled a rainbow which was why it was also known as the Rainbow Bridge. Those that used it were able to traverse across dimensions at the speed of thought. (Journey into Mystery v1 #349)

It was based at Heimdall's observatory from where the rainbow bridge allowed travel from one realm to another. (Siege v1 #2)

Users

  • Heimdall :
  • Daredevil : serving as a replacement for Heimdall, he took the Asgardian's sword and was transformed into the God Without Fear allowing him to be gifted with the sight to see everything and thus become the Guardian of the Bifrost Bridge. (War of the Realms v1 #3)

Notes

  • The Bifrost was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby where it made its first appearance in Journey into Mystery v1 #85 (October, 1962).
  • It was based on Bifrost of Norse Myth.

Alternate Versions

  • In Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer v1 #1 (2018), an alternate world was created when Gamora using the Infinity Stones used its powers to merge various individuals with one another leading to Iron Man along with Thor combined into a single entity that had his own unique backstory. Sigurd Stark in his Iron Hammer armor was able to open the interdimensional rainbow bridge which was called the B.I.F.R.O.S.T.. After regaining his memories, he used this to return to Asgard and used it again to help free his comrades from Malekith.
