Tatooine is a planet that features in Star Wars.

History

Tatooine was a desert world located in the Outer Rim Territories in the galaxy far, far away. According to the Legend of Lehon, the planet was once covered by lush jungle and had been the domain of the Kumumgah but an unknown event caused it to become a desert world.

During the reign of the Old Republic, the planet was noted to had gone under the control of the Hutts. A prominent Hutt crime lord on the planet was Jabba the Hutt.

In later years, Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo escaped the capture of her homeworld by the Trade Federation, and she took refuge on Tatooine with her companions and protectors, including the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. In this time, the Skywalkers befriended Amidala's party, and the young slave Anakin Skywalker ended up participating in a podrace to help his new friends obtain a new T-14 hyperdrive generator for their damaged starship. After discovering that Anakin Skywalker would make an exceptional recruit for the Jedi Order, Master Qui-Gon Jinn managed to obtain his freedom from the junk dealer Watto in the city of Mos Espa, and the Queen's party left Tatooine with the boy. After participating in numerous adventures, including the Invasion of Naboo, the former Tatooinian slave joined the Jedi Order under Kenobi's tutelage.

Ten years later, Skywalker, now a gifted but unruly Jedi student, sensed that his mother, who had stayed on Tatooine and gotten married, was in terrible pain. Skywalker returned to the desert world in the company of Amidala, who was now a senator of the Republic and the young Jedi's secret lover. It transpired that Shmi Skywalker had been captured by Tusken Raiders and was detained in one of their camps. When Skywalker finally discovered his mother's location, he arrived too late, and she died in his arms from the consequences of the Tuskens' mistreatment of her. Enraged, the young Jedi slaughtered the entire Tusken tribe. This had serious consequences as the first step towards Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace. Shortly after the incident, the Clone Wars broke out, and the tortured Tatooinian Jedi became a major player of the pan-galactic conflict.

For the most part, Tatooine avoided the Clone Wars. However, a Jedi-led mission to Jabba's Palace occurred, with the Jedi hoping to rescue Rotta the Huttlet from the Separatist Alliance. Later during the war, Chairman Papanoida and his son, Ion Papanoida headed to Tatooine to track down the bounty hunter Greedo, who had kidnapped members of their family. Several years later, Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side and joined the Sith, the age old adversaries of the Jedi who had long planned to take over the galaxy. This resulted in a new regime forming in the Galactic Empire that was established to replace the Republic, which began to hunt all the surviving Jedi. After the Jedi Purge, Obi-Wan Kenobi came to take the newly born Luke Skywalker with him to Tatooine where he had the child live with his uncle Owen Lars.

Ten years later, Kenobi continued his vigil where he kept his existence hidden from everyone except for Lars. Around this time, Tatooine was visited by Inquisitors hunting for Jedi survivors with Kenobi manging to escape attention. A Jedi survivor came upon Kenobi and requested his aid but Ben refused as he instead looked to remain in hiding.

The Rebel Alliance later learnt that Han Solo had been taken to Jabba's Palace where he remained trapped in carbonite. This saw Luke and Leia embark on a plan to rescue him with this involving an infiltration of the Hutt's crime syndicate. Their efforts came to be uncovered leading to the strike team's apparent capture where they were to be executed alongside Solo by being thrown into the Great Pit of Carkoon to be devoured by the Sarlacc. It was then that the Rebel's launched their ambush with Leia killing Jabba whilst the Hutt's chief bounty hunter Boba Fett was seemingly killed after falling into the pit. Most of the Hutt's crime syndicate were killed in the incident though Fett in reality had survived but was trapped in the sarlacc's stomach. Using his Mandalorian equipment, he was able to escape but was badly wounded in the attempt. His body was out in the sands when he was beset upon by Jawa who stripped him of his armor and left him for dead. Later on, he was found by a tribe of Sand People who took him as a slave but in this time he proved his worth to them leading to him being adopted by them.

Boba Fett later returned to Tatooine where he went to Jabba's Palace that had since been taken over by his Majordomo Bib Fortuna. The bounty hunter then killed the crime lord and take his place as the new crime boss on the planet.

The Twins who were cousins to Jabba looked to claim his operation from Fett leading to a brief skirmish between the two. However, unknown to them, the mayor came to sign away Tatooine to the Pyke Syndicate leading to the Hutt's pulling away from the planet. Boba Fett then prepared for the subsequent attack on his operations as the Pyke's looked to take over the entire world.

After the final defeat of Emperor Palpatine, Rey took the lightsabers of both of her instructors namely Luke an Leia Skywalker where she took them to the Owen's farmstead. She then buried the two hilts beneath the sands by the farm as a grave marker. During this moment, a traveller said that it was good to see someone at the abandoned farm and asked Rey her full name to which she decided to go by Rey Skywalker.

Overview

In appearance, Tatooine was a harsh desert world that orbited twin suns in the galaxy’s Outer Rim.

• Great Pit of Carkoon : a large sand basin that was located in the Dune Sea with it being the dwelling place of a Sarlacc.

The following life forms inhabited the planet:

• Black Lemon : fruit hidden below the sands of Tatooine that were filled with a watery liquid provide a natural means of hydration.

• Sand Ape :
• Krayt Dragons :
• Sarlacc :

It was also inhabited by two sentient races:

• Jawas : meter-tall humanoids completely hidden behind rough, hand-woven robes. Their faces are concealed within the dark folds of a cowl, from which peer their sickly glowing yellow eyes. They comb the deserts of Tatooine in search of discarded scrap and wayward mechanicals. Using their cobbled-together weaponry, they can incapacitate droids and drag them to their treaded fortress-homes, immense sand-scarred vehicles known as sandcrawlers. They sell their hastily refurbished junk to moisture farmers who are hard-pressed to find a better selection elsewhere.
• Sand People : a hostile humanoid race also known as Tusken Raiders that were a culture of nomadic primitive sentients. They wore abundant clothing to protect themselves from Tatooine’s twin suns. The strong beings pursue a nomadic existence in some of Tatooine’s most desolate regions. They fear little, and make sudden raids on local settlers.

Many settlers scratched out a living on moisture farms on the planet.

For some time, the world came under the influence of the criminal activities of the Hutt Clan. In that time, the Hutts were deemed to be the only law that mattered on Tatooine.

An event celebrated on the planet was Boonta Eve that saw podracing as a popular activity.

• Cobb Vanth : a male human who served as the marshal of Mos Pelgo that was a small town on Tatooine. Vanth earned the trust of the townsfolk as a capable peacekeeper and leader. At one point, Vanth came to be the custodian of Boba Fett's Mandalorian armor, which he bought off of Jawa traders.

• Tatooine was created by George Lucas where it made its first appearance in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).

Alternate Versions

• In Star Wars Legends, Tatooine featured in the setting of the former Star Wars Expanded Universe.

In other media

Video games

• In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Tatooine appeared in the setting of the video game. It was revealed in the backstory that the planet was once part of the Rakata empire who decimated its surface leaving into a sand covered world.
• In Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Tatooine appeared as a playable map in the setting of the 2017 video game.
