History
SG-1 (Stargate Team 1)(SG can also stand for Seirra Gulf as seen in the episode rules of engagemt) was the primary unit of Stargate Command. It was created following the re-opening of the Stargate that allowed travel through open wormholes to other worlds with similar devices. To explore the worlds beyond the gate, Stargate Command assembled numerous SG teams with these being created following contact with the threat of the Goa'uld.
SG-1 originally had three members: commanding officer O'Neill; Daniel Jackson, newly returned from Abydos after the events of Stargate; and Air Force Captain Samantha Carter, who had worked on the team of scientists that tried to open the Stargate before Daniel succeeded. Daniel joined the team to find his wife, Sha're, who was taken as a Goa'uld host, and stayed on after her death. Their first mission brought them to Chulak, where they were taken prisoner by Apophis. SG-1 was freed by Teal'c, First Prime to Apophis. Teal'c had come to doubt the Goa'uld as gods, and he had ambitions to fight for the freedom of all Jaffa. He eventually became the fourth member of SG-1, and his knowledge of the Goa'uld proved invaluable on many occasions. (Episode: Children of the Gods)
Overview
SG-1's duties include first contact, reconnaissance and combat, diplomacy, initial archaeological surveying, and technological assessment. The SG-1 originally consisted of U.S. Air Force Captain Dr. Samantha Carter, Doctor Daniel Jackson, Teal'c and Air Force Colonel Jack O'Neill as the commanding officer. The current team lineup is different, however. While Carter (now a Colonel), Jackson and Teal'c are still in the team, they have a new CO, Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell and an additional (alien) team member (Vala Mal Doran).
The standing orders of SG-1 were:
- Open diplomatic negotiations with other worlds.
- Obtain technologies to help defend Earth against the Goa'uld, the Ori and other aggressors.
Team members
The members of SG-1 remained stable for the first five seasons of SG-1. However, at the end of Season 5, Daniel Jackson dies from exposure to severe radiation.<ref name="meridian">"Meridian"</ref> He ascends to a higher plane of existence, however, so this "death" is not permanent. During Season 6, he is replaced by Jonas Quinn. Jonas remained with SG-1 for a year, before returning home in an attempt to bring peace to the factions of his home world. It is at this time that Daniel, ascended, is forced back into the mortal plane as punishment for interfering in mortal affairs.<ref>"Full Circle"</ref> He remains on the SG-1 team ever afterwards.
Colonel Jack O'Neill was promoted to Brigadier-General and Commander of the SGC in Season 8, and so Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter took command of a three-membered SG-1. Following the defeat of the Goa'uld, the unit unofficially disbanded, with each member going their own separate ways. Carter went on to head Stargate Research and Development out of Area 51, Teal'c to take part in the forming of the newly emerging Free Jaffa Nation and Daniel to join the Atlantis expedition, whilst Jack was promoted again, effectively leaving the SGC. Early in Season 9, under new commander Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, SG-1 reformed. Through Season 9 into the beginning of Season 10, SG-1 consisted of Cameron Mitchell, Daniel Jackson (as he missed the flight to the Pegasus Galaxy), Teal'c, and Lt. Colonel Carter.
Season 10's "Morpheus" brought in Vala Mal Doran as a probationary employee of the SGC, generally traveling with—and hence a de facto member of—SG-1. In the episode "Memento Mori", Vala became a full-fledged member of SG-1.
Summary
- Richard Dean Anderson as Major General (formerly Colonel, then Brigadier General) Jack O'Neill (Seasons 1 to 8)
- Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson (Seasons 1-5,7-10)
- Amanda Tapping as Colonel (formerly Captain, Major, and then Lt. Colonel) Samantha Carter (Seasons 1-10)
- Christopher Judge as Teal'c (Seasons 1-10)
- Corin Nemec as Jonas Quinn (Season 6)
- Ben Browder Colonel (formerly Lt Colonel) Cameron Mitchell (Seasons 9-10)
- Claudia Black as Vala Mal Doran (Season 10)
Alternate universes
The membership of SG-1 has also varied in several alternative universes. In Season 3 Charles Kawalsky was included. In Season Nine alternative teams included Martouf and Janet Fraiser<ref name="ripple_effect">"Ripple Effect"</ref>, and Season Ten included reference to an SG-1 commanded by Major Lorne.<ref name="the_road_not_taken">"The Road Not Taken"</ref>
History
Season 1
SG-1 was one of nine original units, with SG-2 under the command of Major Charles Kawalsky who sadly, during a mission to go after Daniel Jacksons wife Sha're and brother Skaara after being taken captive by Apophis, is taken as a host by a Goa'uld symbiote, dies in the second episode. SG-3 is comprised of U.S. Marines under the command of Col. Makepeace (seen in The Broca Divide). SG-9 is led by Captain Jonas Hanson. Three members of this team were killed (seen in The First Commandment). The other teams were not seen or disclosed.
Seasons 2-5
For a brief period, Major Castleman is given command of SG-1 when O'Neill is overwhelmed by Ancient knowledge. O'Neill is later saved by the Asgard, and returns to command.<ref name="the_fifth_race">"The Fifth Race"</ref>
A few months later, Carter is promoted to Major.
The following year, Jack O'Neill goes undercover to arrest rogue elements of the NID. As part of this operation, Jack breaks procedure and is forced to take early retirement. Col. Makepeace briefly acts as commander of SG-1, before it is revealed that he is a mole within the SGC, and is arrested. <ref name="shades_of_grey">"Shades of Grey"</ref>
During the fourth year, SG-1 was temporarily disbanded after General George Hammond was replaced as leader of Stargate Command. Jack was suspended, Teal'c was transferred to SG-3 and Daniel and Sam were both assigned to positions on base. This arrangement did not last long.<ref name="chain_reaction">"Chain Reaction"</ref>
At the end of the fifth year, Daniel Jackson was killed after he was exposed to a lethal dose of radiation when saving the lives of people in Kelowna. With the help of the Ascended being Oma Desala, he Ascended to a higher plane of existence, leaving SG-1 with three members. <ref name="meridian">"Meridian"</ref>
Season 6
SG-1 attempted to find a suitable replacement for Daniel, but failed at first, going through over 15 different candidates. Eventually, Jonas Quinn, a native of Kelowna, was able to persuade O'Neill that he would make a good addition to SG-1. He quickly proved a resourceful addition to the team. <ref name="redemption">"Redemption (Part 1 & 2)"</ref>
Season 7
Daniel watched over SG-1 as an Ascended being, visiting them during several trying times. However, while attempting to use his powers to defend Abydos, he was forced to return to human form for breaking the rules, as he was not permitted to interfere. SG-1 discovers him while searching for the Lost City of the Ancients. SG-1 briefly consisted of five members, before Jonas Quinn returned to his homeworld to attempt to bring peace, and to educate them about the Goa'uld. SG-1 returns to its original lineup. <ref name="homecoming_pt2">"Homecoming"</ref>
As Jack is exposed to Ancient knowledge for a second time, he hands off command to Major Carter. She remains in command until the Asgard are able to save him once again. <ref name="lost_city_pt2">"Lost City, (Part 2)"</ref>
Season 8
O'Neill is promoted to Brigadier General, and the head of the SGC, and command of SG-1 is passed on to a newly promoted Lt. Colonel Carter. SG-1 returns to a three member team, occasionally augmented by General O'Neill. <ref name="new_order_pt2">"New Order (Part 2)"</ref>
Season 9
At the end of the eighth year, SG-1 unofficially disbands. Carter went on to head Stargate Research and Development out of Area 51, Teal'c to take part in the forming of the newly emerging Free Jaffa Nation and Daniel to join the Atlantis expedition. Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell is assigned by request to head SG-1. He is given a list of candidates, but quickly gives up on the interview process. It is his desire to have the original team back together, but the former members are slow to rejoin.<ref name="avalon_pt1">"Avalon"</ref> Unofficially, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c are with him from the very beginning, the former because of missing the Daedalus on its mission to Atlantis, the latter because the schedule of the Jaffa High Council allows him to do so; Samantha Carter rejoins to aid in the destruction of the Ori beachhead. Eventually, the team reunites officially during the hunt for Ba'al; Teal'c has become disgusted with the machinations of the High Council, and Daniel and Carter joined to help defend the galaxy against the Ori threat.<ref name="ex_deus_machina">"Ex Deus Machina"</ref>
Thanks to Vala Mal Doran they learn that the Ori has built an entire fleet, and a second supergate in our galaxy, so SG-1 quickly organize a fleet from the Earth ships Odyssey and the Korolev, numerous Free Jaffa hatak ships, an Asgard 'ONeill' class battleship and even some Lucian Alliance ships in order to hold at bay the Ori invasion. Unfortunately the battle turns out to be a disaster as the Ori ships easily destroy the organized fleet whilst their shields sustain no visible damage.
Season 10
The Ori began their invasion of the Milky Way galaxy. Miraculously all members of SG-1 survive the disastrous battle, and shortly after they rescue Vala Mal Doran from one of the Ori ships during the invasion of Chulak. In episode "Memento Mori", General Landry officially granted Vala Mal Doran with SG-1 membership.
Since the Ori are conquering world after world, SG-1 is desperately searching for Merlin's weapon which is capable of destroying ascended beings.
On a planet in which Merlin himself was left in stasis, SG-1 works with him to build the Sangraal, when Merlin dies, Daniel looks into a repository and obtains the knowledge and conscience of Merlin and races to complete the device as Adria comes after them. The device is half completed when Adria arrives and captures Daniel, the rest of SG-1 flee through the gate. Daniel becomes a prior of the Ori, which SG-1 learn of and use of the Odyssey to capture him, he tells them it is all part of his plan to destroy the Ori and complete the Sangraal. He steals the Odyssey and takes General O'Neill along. The device completed, he sends it through the supergate onboard an Ori ship. It is later confirmed by Ba'al (having taken Adria as his host) that the weapon succeeded in destroying the Ori, he may however have lied. Daniel returns to normal at the end of the episode with the help of Merlin's memories. <ref name="The Shroud">The Shroud</ref>
Notable accomplishments
These include:
- Causing the demise of several Goa'uld. Either individually or as a group, the members of SG-1 are responsible for the deaths of Ra, Apophis, Sokar, Hathor, Nirrti, Marduk, Imhotep, Setesh and Cronus, as well as being indirectly responsible for the end of the reign of Anubis.
- Saving Earth on several occasions, including:
- Destroying Apophis' invasion fleet by destroying a sun.
- Preventing an asteroid from hitting Earth.
- Sent a note back in time to keep the earth's population from becoming sterile.
- Using the Ancient knowledge possessed by Jack O'Neill to discover and activate an Ancient outpost in Antarctica and defend Earth from Anubis' invasion fleet.
- Forging alliances between the people of Earth (known in the parts of the galaxy once ruled by the Goa'uld as the Tau'ri), the Tok'ra, and the Jaffa Resistance.
- Making numerous first contacts, notably the Tollan, the Asgard and the Nox.
Notes
- SG-1 were created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner where they featured in the setting of the Stargate SG-1 universe.
