History

Clone Troopers were genetically engineered clones that were designed to serve as the basis of the clone army. They were created under the secret manipulation of the Sith Lord Darth Sidious who intended to militarise the Galactic Republic in the time of the Separatist Crisis. To that end, he made use of the cover of a Jedi Master named Sifo-Dyas to approach the cloners from the planet Kamino in the commission of an army for the Republic. A template was chosen from the Mandalorian bounty hunter named Jango Fett whose genetic material was to serve as the basis for this force. The clones were bred in secret where they were trained and provided equipment to serve as soldiers for the Grand Army of the Republic. Following the formation of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the clone army was ready for deployment where they were launched to wage war against the Separatists with their first mission being attacking the planet Geonosis.

set three years later, the clone army continues to fight in the Clone Wars against the Separatist battle droid army. However, just as it appears that the Republic will win the war, Chancellor Palpatine, secretly the Sith lord Darth Sidious, orders the clone army to execute Order 66, turning them against the Jedi. The clone troopers kill their Jedi commanders, although a few manage to escape, while the 501st Legion, led by the newly christened Darth Vader, storms the Jedi Temple, burning it and killing the Jedi inside, which effectively ends the Jedi Order. Following Vader's assassination of the remaining Separatist leaders, Palpatine transforms the Republic into the Galactic Empire and the clone army becomes the basis of the Imperial Army

For the next 3 years, the clone army continued in its battle the Separatists across the galaxy. This was until the height of the conflict when Chancellor Palpatine enacted his secret Sith initiative by triggering Order 66. This caused the clone troopers to turn against and begin to eliminate them as threats to the Republic. This saw many of the clones turning against their Jedi commanders where only a few of them managed to escape the resultant Jedi Purge. Among the only survivors was Anakin Skywaler who had sworn himself as an apprentice to Darth Sidious and was christened as Darth Vader. In his new role, he headed the elimination of all the Jedi in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant with this including many younglings thus effectively destroying the Jedi Order. This was followed by the assassination of the Separatist leaders on Mustafar whereupon Palpatine re-organised the Republic into the first Galactic Empire.

After the Declaration of the New Order, the Clone Troopers were reorganised to become the part of the new Galactic Empire's military where they became the Stormtroopers. This saw them phasing out the use of cloned soldiers in favour of naturally born recruits. Vice Admiral Rampart was placed in charge of Project War-Mantle by Governor Tarkin that saw the gradual replacement of the Clone Army. Part of this involved the establishment of a secret Imperial base on Daro where 50 Clone Commandos were set to train recruits from all over the galaxy with these encompassing 1,000 TK troopers.

Thirty years after the Battle of Endor, the First Order made use of brainwashing of young children that were taken from their families to recruit for the ranks of their Stormtroopers. However, after the defection of FN-2187, General Hux suggested that Supreme Leader Snoke should consider the creation of a new clone army.

Overview

In appearance, Clone Troopers were all human clones that were based on the genetic material of Jango Fett. At the time of their creation, they represented the future of galactic warfare with them being deemed far superior to battle droids.

Unknown to many, the clones were engineered with a special inhibitor chip to help ensure that they could be controlled. These forced Clone Troopers to obediently follow a set of directives once they were triggered.

Republic clone troopers represented the future of galactic warfare. Far superior to battle droids, the clone troopers formed the backbone of the Republic's new military

These clones were divided into various specialisations that included:

  • ARF Troopers : Advanced Recon Force Scout Troopers were clone that demonstrated intelligence and the ability to survive where they wore light stealth armour to engage in reconnaissance missions.
  • ARC Troopers : Advanced Recon Commandos Troopers were elite clone soldiers that were chosen from those that distinguished themselves in the Grand Army.
  • Clone Commandos : elite clones that were bred to serve as part of commando units that were sent to operate independently out in the field.

Army units of Clone Troopers were also divided into numerous detachments that included:

  • 501st Legion :
    • 332nd Company :
    • Torrent Company :
  • 212th Attack Battalion :
    • Ghost Company :
    • Foxtrot Group :
  • 21st Nova Corps :
  • 41st Elite Corps :
  • Coruscant Guard :
  • Clone Force 99 : an elite Clone Commando unit informally known as the 'Bad Batch' that consisted of clones with desirable genetic mutations such as increased strength or smell with them having a non-traditional approach to tactics.

Upon their deployment, the Clone Troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic came outfitted with a range of weapons and equipment. They were provided a set of form-fitting plastoid plates over a black body glove that could withstand impact, pressure, heat and acrid vapors. It was not immune to direct weapon fire from a laser but helped improve the clones survival odds. Improvements were made throughout the Clone Wars leading to a number of armor variants being introduced for specialised missions.

  • In Star Wars: The Annotated History (1997), Leigh Brackett's first draft for The Empire Strikes Back initially developed the concept that Lando Calrissian was a clone from a planet of clones involved in the Clone Wars mentioned in A New Hope and were nearly made extinct by the war.

Video games

  • In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Clone Troopers appeared later as antagonists in the video game tie-in. Among the trooper variants seen included the jet-pack fire wielding heavy weapon wielding Clone Heavy Gunners, Blaze Troopers, and the swift Clone Assassins.
  • In Star Wars: Republic Commando, the player took the role of specially bred Clone Commandos in the video game. These were unique variants of the Clone Troopers that were bred for special forces missions where they operated in pods of four to complete their missions. They were equipped with special weapons and armour with the player taking the role of the leader of Delta Squad in the campaign mode of the game.
  • In Star Wars: Battlefront, players took the role of Clone Troopers in the video game.
  • In Star Wars: Battlefront II, players took the role of Clone Troopers in the video game. During the campaign mode, they took the role of a clone in the elite 501st Legion starting from their first deployment on Geonosis with them fighting numerous engagements in the Clone Wars. After the Declaration of the New Order, they joined the ranks of the Stormtroopers where it was said that the Empire began recruiting new members instead of making more clones. Clone production was said to had stopped as a result of a clone rebellion on Kamino which was put down by the Stormtroopers of the 501st Legion. The 501st suffered casualties after the destruction of the Death Star with them being deployed on Hoth where they sought to get revenge for their earlier defeat.
  • In Star Wars: Battlefront II, Clone Troopers were playable in the multiplayer mode set in the video game.
