Biography

Origin

Nathan Christopher Charles Summers was a male Mutant who was the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor who was a clone of Jean Grey. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #241) His birth was masterminded by Mister Sinister who created an exact replica of Jean Grey after her seeming death in order for a a child to be born from the Summers and Grey bloodlines. It was believed that the offspring of such a melding of powerful Mutant heritages would result in a figure that would be the saviour of his people and the planet. (Cable v1 #6)

The infant child was later met by his alternate reality teenage sister Rachel Summers where she established a psi-link with him and promised to always protect him. Scott Summers then looked to retire from the X-Men and spend time with his wife Madelyne as the two would raise their son in Anchorage, Alaska. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #201)

Nathan Christopher was taken to X-Factor's Ship, where he was cared for by Jean Grey and his father. Soon, he started to show his heritage as the boy manifested a protective force bubble around himself whenever he was in danger. (X-Factor v1 #42)

Through Ship, he came to be infected with a genetic virus that caused his body to be unable to replenish itself by generating new cells at the end of their lifespan. It was determined that no terrestrial technology was able to save him but then X-Factor was approached by Sister Askani who came from the far future to claim the Chosen who was desperately needed in their time. She promised that they would be able to save Nathan and that he would be loved but it meant that he could not return to his parents. Though unwilling to part with his son, Cyclops came to reluctantly allowed Askani to take him away and his son disappeared into the timestream. (X-Factor v1 #67)

Once he was brought to the future, the child was placed in an incubation crib to help arrest the Techno-Organic Virus spreading through his body. During this time, a clone of him was created where at that moment the Askani hideout was attacked by Canaanite soldiers. They came to kill many of the Askani who fled with the real child whilst Apocalypse found the clone who he believed was the real Summers child. He then took the boy with him to be raised as his own offspring and future host body that he named Stryfe. (Cable v1 #8)

Though many details of Dayspring's life over the following decades are unclear, things were never as simple as merely Clan Chosen versus the New Canaanites. Stryfe also gathered power and rose into the public eye as the Chaos-Bringer, cloaked in a metallic helmet and armor so that Dayspring never knew his true face. Stryfe warred with the New Canaanites as often as alongside them, seeking to reclaim his position as heir to Apocalypse's throne with his soldiers, the Scions of the High Lord. In one encounter, Stryfe managed to disable Dayspring with a psionic sickness after forcibly extracting the Professor from his system. Only the intervention of Dayspring's future counterpart, Cable, prevented him from dying that night. By this point, Aliya had taken the battle-name of Jenskot after the legendary 'first ones', and her relationship with Dayspring progressed into full romance. (Cable v1 #25)

During one of his missions, he encountered a Canaanite firing squad where he killed most of its members with only a single survivor by the name of D'Von Kray who swore revenge and he went through alterations to become more powerful to fight Cable. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1)

In one of his travels, he confronted En Sabah Nur thousands of years ago where he battled his foes Dark Riders and defeated them. He then duelled his arch-foe who came to sever his cybernetic arm and was startled at the futuristic technology he had witnessed. This allowed Cable to kill Nur with a gunshot to the head whereupon he re-attached his techno-organic arm. Ozymandias and the Dark Riders then swore allegiance to the Traveler as per their mantra of survival of the fittest. However, he refused with Cable telling Ozymandias that to always remember that there would always be someone stronger and smarter with survival of the fittest meaning that a person had a responsibility to help those who were not strong. He then handed a blade to Ozymandias before the scene leaving his foes leaderless as a result. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #26)

Around 8 years ago, he came to first encounter the man named Stryfe where the Canaanites defeat of their enemies the warlord came to travel back into the past to exasperate the Mutant rebellion and create havoc in the timestream. This was at odds with Cable's own goals in creating a more ordered rebellion in order to bring about a more peaceful future. As such, Nathan went about attempting to track down Stryfe and stop him in the past. (X-Force v1 #17)

Cable

Arriving in the present, Cable came to emerge in a blast of light suddenly in a populated area in Scotland where he came to be washed up, confused and traumatised from the journey. His appearance combined with the fact that he was not speaking any known language made the people there believe him to be the Devil's herald. The timely arrival of Dr. Moira MacTaggert helped stopped further hostilities with Cable using his telepathy to remove any memory of his arrival and instead substitute his appearance as a normal person where it was claimed that he was MacTaggart's cousin. She then took the visitor to Muir Island for testing where the sensors caused an overload in the equipment and Moira was nearly killed by falling debris but Cable saved her. He then used his telepathy to learn English allowing him to communicate with her as he regained his memories where he claimed that he was a time traveller seeking out Professor Xavier. (Cable v1 #-1)

Nathan Dayspring Summers then made his way to New York City where he sought to learn more about this era as future historical records were lacking on details about this time. Going to the library, he looked to gather as much information as possible when he heard of an incident at the nearby jewellery store. He arrived at the scene but was ambushed by the Vulture who had just started his career as a costumed supervillain where he detonated an explosive to hide his theft which buried Cable under debris. He was pulled out by a local security guard named Franklin Rhodes who decided to help Cable and gave him a place to stay. Summers stayed with the man for a time and went out with him for drinks as he went to meet some of his old friends. It was then that the bar was attacked by D'Von Kray who was looking for revenge against Dayspring leading to Cable and Rhodes battling him with them being joined by Wolverine who had been dispatched to stop the rogue warrior from the future. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1)

During his time with the Six Pack, Cable rescued a U.S. government agent named Kevin Tremain from the Mandarin's clutches. He saved Tremain's life with a blood transfusion but in doing so, unfortunately, transferred a small portion of the techno-virus to Tremain as well. Kevin was a mutant and so Cable left him at Xavier's for care, unaware that the virus would interact with Tremain’s powers in unpredicted ways. (Cable v1 #72) On another occasion, Cable saved Rogue from an angry mob that was chasing her after her powers kicked in while kissing a boy for the first time. She was looking at her followers as she ran into Cable and passed out before getting a clear look at her savior. Therefore, she never remembered their past meeting. (Cable v1 #87)

Soon thereafter, the various X-Teams found themselves under attack by the Phalanx, a techno-organic collective. One of these creatures invaded X-Force’s base, though when it tried to assimilate their computer systems and databanks it was defeated by the computer’s sentient system, the Professor. Surprisingly, the encounter altered the Professor somewhat, enabling him to form himself a humanoid body and interact with X-Force directly. He even came up with a new name for himself – Prosh, an amalgam of the terms “Professor“ and “Ship.” Before long, though, it was discovered that Prosh’s presence on the planet was seriously disruptive to other technology, including Cable's techno-organic virus, making it hard for Cable to maintain his balance in his constant struggle to keep the infection at bay. As such, Prosh absorbed a bit more mass to turn himself into a vessel capable of interstellar travel and he left Earth to explore the stars. (X-Force v1 #39)

Meanwhile, Cable and Domino had begun to move beyond the realm of friendship for the first time in their long history together. Nathan asked Domino on a date and they were both surprised when she accepted. They were both rather nervous and Nathan did not make things any better when he accidentally mixed up some of the things he had shared with Domino, as he was referring to some of his experiences with Copycat. (Cable v1 #15)

Shortly thereafter, a M'Kraan Crystal wave was about to destroy and remake reality, leaving the X-teams one hour for last things. Cyclops and Phoenix revealed to Cable that it had been they who had raised him in the future as Slym and Redd Dayspring. Nate had deduced that fact for himself previously, but he was heartened to have his parents share that with him nonetheless. When the crystal wave finally reached Earth, Cable shared a deep kiss with Domino, but what the X-Men had believed to be the end of the world turned out to be a hoax. (Cable v1 #20)

With the crystal wave having passed without effect – to his perspective at least, Cable reacted to a distress call from X-Force at the MLF's base in the Bahamas. He arrived and discovered, with the rest of X-Force, that their enemy Reignfire was actually one of the team’s own - Sunspot, who had been missing for weeks. Using his telepathic powers, Nate managed to bring Sunspot's old personality back to the surface, with the side effect of downloading a portion of his Askani knowledge into Bobby's mind. Additionally, Sunspot learned from the Askani teaching how to use his powers to fly. Around the same time, Cable moved X-Force back into Xavier’s mansion after yet another one of their headquarters had been destroyed by an enemy. (X-Force v1 #44)

Next, Cable received a psychic beacon from his old mentor, Blaquesmith, who had apparently also at some point time-traveled to the present. Someone had tracked down the telepathic Blaquesmith and accessed all his data on Nathan. Unable to identify the assailant, Cable could do nothing but ask Blaquesmith to keep him posted. (Cable v1 #21)

Soon afterwards, the truth behind Blaquesmith's mysterious attacker was uncovered when Charles Xavier was revealed to be the psi-demon Onslaught. Cable was investigating the destruction of Blaquesmith's ship in Baltimore and came under prolonged assault by Onslaught's agents: first his minion Post (aka agent Kevin Tremain from Cable's past) and then the Incredible Hulk himself. Cable was seriously injured as a result of the attacks and only suffered further harm in the coming battles with Apocalypse, Onslaught and the Sentinels. It was only through the intervention of Nathaniel Richards and Cable's friends that he managed to keep the techno-virus from totally consuming his innards in the aftermath of the Onslaught crisis. (Cable v1 #36)

Around this time, Cable began to form a deep friendship with Storm, though nothing romantic ever fully developed from this. He also isolated himself more and more from the X-Force team, leaving Domino in charge of most of the missions. Working as a solo operative, Nathan redesigned his costume to include additional hand-to-hand weaponry, including a pair of blades hidden in his shoulder harness. When the troops of Operation: Zero Tolerance lowered the hammer on the Xavier Institute, Cable took on the mission of saving or purging all the files Xavier had accumulated over the years: Cerebro Schematics, Xavier Protocols, Legacy Virus data, the Mutant Underground, etc. He came into conflict with Operation: Zero Tolerance's First Strike soldiers and Bastion himself but, in the end, he succeeded in his mission. When he had finished with the battle at the mansion, Cable tracked down X-Force and attempted to send them into hiding under fake aliases to avoid the coming dark days for mutantkind. However, they declined and broke ties with Cable and the X-Men, trying to live on their own instead. (X-Force v1 #70)

He disappeared for two years but received a message to meet in Egypt though was unsure who the message was from but whilst there he came to meet Blaquesmith. (Soldier X v1 #1)

Reaching the pinnacle of his power, Cable came to determine that his strength would eventually burn out. Thus, he arranged to use them to do as much good as he could in the world in his last few days. This saw him attempting to unify the world where he started by gathering the destroyed fragments of his former space station headquarters Graymalkin. He then used his telekinesis to use them to create a floating island that he named Providence that he placed above the South Pacific Ocean. Once established, he restored the time displacement core (TDC) allowing him to restore the teleportation matrix and re-establishing his Bodyslide capabilities. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #6)

X-Men

During the interrogation of Sabretooth, they came to learn the true nature behind the Children of the Vault with Cable re-joining the X-Men in combating the threat posed by that species. (X-Men v2 #191)

Arriving in 2043 A.D., he arrived at a ruined New Jersey that had been devastated by the superstorm of 2012. (Cable v2 #1)

In reality, he timeslided to the far future where he came to find Blaquesmith who had also found himself in this ruined barren timeline. Blaquesmith informed him that this future resulted from Hope being killed in the past by the Avengers. Cable then vowed to protect his daughter though was told that the Techno-Organic Virus had spread so deeply through his body that he only had 24 hours to live. Despite his impending death, he resolved himself to go back into the past to save Hope by targeting the Avengers for elimination. (Avengers: X-Sanction v1 #1)

After the war between the Avengers and the X-Men, Cable awoke from his coma and left Utopia, leaving Hope a note telling her not to follow him. He tracked down Forge, who had gone mad and was presumed dead, and used his telepathic powers to create a psychic scenario that allowed Forge to repair the damage to his psyche, curing him of his insanity. Cable had begun receiving visions of disasters, and needed Forge as part of a team to stop these events from coming to pass. Along with Forge, Cable also recruited Domino, Doctor Nemesis, and Colossus. (Cable and X-Force v1 #1)

After a time Cable went and reassembled an all-new X-Force team to protect the mutant nation and give it a stake in the world after altered humans were taken for usage by Secret Intelligence agencies across the world to be blamed for assassinations and terrorist acts. The new crew members Dayspring had accumulated were Marrow, Fantomex, MeMe, and Psylocke. (X-Force v4 #1)

He was next in 2087 where he was hunting down Stryfe but deviated from his mission after an Inhuman attack being made against the city of Boston that was made by plant-based lifeforms created by the Shredded Man. This saw Cable journeying back to the present in order to fix the mistakes of the Avengers and prevent this future from coming to pass. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2) Making his dramatic entrance whilst dealing with some plant animal chimeras produced from a plague by the Shredded Man, the old soldier assumed command over present members of the Avengers. Not recognizing one of them, he spoke of coming from a future that they 'loused up big time' and that what's happening in Boston eventually overtakes the entire world where he's from and proposed he would be taking up field command position until the crisis was over. Narrowly avoiding some infighting thanks to Deadpool's encouragement to trust his judgement, along with being told that the avengers aren't the usual crowd he was used to commandeering. Nate disclosed what these hybrid creatures were and about how they transmitted the pandemic across the globe, disclosing an enzyme inhibitor to Pietro for him to get synthesized. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3) The group were soon attacked by the culprit behind the incident; the Shredded Man, who unleashed the toxin slowly poisoning the current residence including Rogue, Voodoo and Deadpool. But he noted how Synapse was immune due to being an Inhuman and ordered her to go after their assailant, to which she begrudgingly complied. After, Quicksilver administered the mass-produced antigen and secured Deadpool some needed munitions and a fan of his exploits to shoot with. Cable had a flash of how Emily's choices would have disastrous consequence while talking with Rogue about the T-cloud, rushing off in her general direction he intercepted her before she could throttle who he found out to be her grandfather. Warning her how much worse things will be if she killed him, Nathan wondered if what he overheard was true, after hearing her reply he presented the Shredded Man with an ultimatum: either call off his Inhuman plague or suffer under a concoction of his that removed Inhuman immunity. When the adversary refused stating he was prepared to die, Cable instead turned the defense mechanism killer on his kin instead. Left without options, Ivan drew back the Terragenesis Plague that he unleashed to save her but dissolved his own being in the process. Nate did not know what to do with the secret bequeathed to him after his Inhuman companion begged him not to speak of it. Noting her guilt, the other members asked what was eating the young heroine only for Cable to state she would come out with it when she was ready. Back at their headquarters, Nate had a talk with their squad leader Captain America asking if he was staying on or not with the time traveler leaning towards the latter, after hearing Rogers was setting up to track down Red Skull to liberate Xavier's brain. Nathan warmed up to the idea of staying longer to see it through walking off with the rest of the team after a hard fought battle. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4)

Nathan later came to detect a disturbance in the timeline caused by a time traveller called Conquest who was trading advanced future weapons to people in more primitive eras. (Cable v3 #4)

Kid Cable

Nathan next responded to an incident involving the time-displaced original X-Men who were being targeted by an unknown assailant. The attacker ambushed the younger Iceman with Cable looking to protect him though Bobby came to be rendered unconscious. Cable then battled his assailant who managed to get a drop on Nathan and ended up killing him with the murderer being a younger version of himself who had come back in time to clean up the mess made to the timeline. (Extermination v1 #1)

Afterwards, he came to notice the supply of advanced weapons from his own timeline that was being supplied to the present. These were being used as part of anti-Mutant operation that was being conducted in the nation of Transia. This saw him recruiting a Deathlok who was dispatched to infiltrate the country but the cyborg ended up being captured and dismantled for study. The young Cable then broke into the Transian science and research department to recover Deathlok but the pair had to go on the run from security forces. They were saved by the timely arrival of X-Force who had been tracking the young Cable who had been looking for justice for his older counterpart. (X-Force v5 #1)

House of X

Fighting the contest of swords in Cable v4 #5.

After the establishment of Krakoa, the living island came to be considered the homeland of a new Mutant nation where all of their kind were invited to it. During this time, the young Cable came to spend time with his family who now resided in a specially grown habitat on the Moon that was known as the Summers House. (X-Men v5 #1)

With his parents, they investigated the station and found that its crew had been killed by extra-dimensional beings called the Vescora who invaded again once the Peak was restarted. Whilst Cyclops and Jean fought them, Cable was sent to remove the Light of Galador from the station's core thus deactivating it along with the alien gateway. Nathan than joined the other champions at Krakoa that were gathering for the coming Contest of Swords on Otherworld. (Cable v4 #5)

Afterwards, he came to be given the position of Chief of Security for the newly re-formed S.W.O.R.D. station when the space program was reinstituted by Krakoa. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #1) At this point, Earth came under attack from Symbiotes after their god Knull had been freed onto the cosmos. The cosmic being then blanketed the Earth in Symbiotes some of which attacked Krakoa and took over Cable who became a vessel for Knull's presence. He then battled S.W.O.R.D. who had come to free the Krakoans where he fought against Eden Fesi with Knull using Cable's bodyslide technology to match the teleporter. Knull nearly defeated Manifold but was then attacked by Joanna Cargill who had freed herself from a Symbiote cocoon and ripped off Cable's cybernetic arm. Deprived of bodysliding capability, Manifold was then able to teleport a piece of a sun and sent it at the Symbiote matter controlling Cable thus freeing him from Knull's control. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #4)

Unable to stop Stryfe, the young Cable decided that the only person able to stop his clone was his older self. Thus, he decided to enact plans to bring about the return of his older counterpart and informed his parents of the decision. Jean Grey then informed Charles Xavier who allowed for the resurrection to be made by the Five with a clone of the older Cable being made who emerged onto Krakoa. He reborn Cable then went about attempting to stop Stryfe where he gathered a team including his younger counterpart, his parents and Deadpool where they found his clone operating from a hell dimension. (Cable v4 #11)

Cable then set about acting to secure the interests of Krakoa and responding to threats to the nation. This included claiming a powerful supergun that was built on Breakworld by the warlike natives. Taking Graymalkin II, he travelled to the vicinity of the planet where from orbit he made planetfall. He then used a Krakoan gateway to bring forward his team that included Cannonball, Boom-Boom, Wiz Kid, Khora of the Burning Heart and Lila Cheney. They managed to reach the Breakworlder factory where they damaged the weapon enough in order to confiscate it and teleport it back to planet Arakko. Once there, it was outfitted with mysterium-based ammunition for use in the recent war being fought against the Dread Lord Dormammu. (Cable: Reloaded v1 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

As noted by himself, he has had many names over the years. (Cable v1 #-1) To Clan Askani, he was believed to be the prophecised Askani'son. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #-1) In fact, he came to be regarded as the Chosen who was desperately needed in their time. (X-Factor v1 #67) One of the names he came to be known by was the Traveler. (X-Force v2 #1) In one instance, Apocalypse came to refer to Nathan as being the Son of Tomorrow. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #27)

As a general rule, he hated using his telepathy on innocent people. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1)

He believed in always knowing more about his enemies more than they knew about him. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1) Cable had noted that he and Captain America were similar as they were both men raised on the field of battle. (Avengers: X-Sanction v1 #1)

The manner he was brought up led him to think he could save the world but as he grew older he realised that all he could do was help the best way he could do so. (Cable v1 #102)

Cable had said that his belief in God was his own and that his philosophy dictated how he lived his life. (Cable v1 #102)

In his future, he came to admire the exploits of Ranger Rocket who was well-regarded as a strategic genius that was a mixture of Alexander the Great and Jesse James. As such, he was noted to respect the galactic folk hero when he encountered him in the past. (Cable: Reloaded v1 #1)

It was known that he was the son of Scott Summers with his biological mother being Madelyne Pryor. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #241)

He had a sister from an alternate reality with this being Rachel Summers. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #201)

It was said that even as a child that Nathan Summers knew that Apocalypse was his enemy. En Sabah Nur was said to be an anathema to every fibre of his being and character. (X-Factor v1 #67)

Hope was said to had given him a reason for living and a purpose in life. (Avengers: X-Sanction v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

The Son of Tomorrow in Cable v3 #1.

In one case, he was classified as being an Alpha-Mutant and among the most powerful on the planet. (X-Men v2 #97) However, the Red Skull on one occasion came to refer to him as being an Omega-level Mutant. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #19) After the stabilisation of his mutation, he came to be referred to as an Omega-level telekinetic. (Cable and X-Force v1 #14)

Through his telepathy, he could read the mind of another person to learn their language where he became immediately fluent in it. (Cable v1 #-1) In another instance, he used it to cause a person to fall asleep or use a quick telepathic flash to ascertain the surface thoughts of another person with this being valuable in combat as it allowed him to determine an enemy's next action. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1)

It was noted that he possessed a high level of telekinesis. (X-Men: Declassified v1 #1) Even as a baby, he was able to manifest a shield that could protect him from harm. (X-Factor v1 #42) However, he had to concentrate to use his telekinesis and if he struggled breathing then he could not use this power effectively. (Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory v1 #1)

Nathan was said to hold latent time-travel abilities allowing him to project his mind across decades and allow his ambient consciousness to find people in the timestream. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #321)

The bionic eye could register the friction created by a speedster when they ran through the air with this being seen as an infrared red streak allowing him to know where they were to hit them. (New Mutants v1 #89)

Despite its metallic form, upon touching his arm one could tell that the metal was alive in some manner. (Cable v1 #-1)

Later on, he could jettison the arm if it was damaged and activate a hard-light holo-prosthetic that served as a temporary replacement. (Cable: Reloaded v1 #1)

Embedded within his body was an artificial intelligence calling itself Professor who offered to be a friend and confidante to him. (Askani'son v1 #1) Professor was able to provide him information and research for Cable's missions. (X-Force v1 #8) He was noted to possess the same voice as the Celestial Ship that had been left on Earth and was used as a base for X-Factor though Professor claimed to have had no memory of these events. (X-Force v1 #20)

Cable to no longer trust the Professor after the artificial intelligence was believed to had been compromised by Stryfe. This led to him abandoning the use of him in favour of a home-brew A.I. that was called Belle. (Cable v4 #10) Belle was a feminine A.I. who assisted Cable by providing analysis and information for him on his mission. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2)

She was able to initiate the 'Lifeboat Protocol' as a matter of last resort which seemingly caused Cable to erase his own mind and leaving him in a mindless state. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #19) In reality, it erased the A.I. in his arm in order to make room for his consciousness within the cybernetics. Thus, he was protected within the hard drive until his mind was restored to his body. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #23) Under Cable's Casket Protocol, measures were made to secure Cable's holdings in the event of his death with this including data being shredded and assets being disabled. (Cable v4 #10) Cable could switch his A.I.'s and activate a combat tattoo suite that was called Nicky that had a devilish male persona who was more combat-tuned and less of an all-rounder when compared to Belle but was perfect for battle engagements. This included helping switch the ammunition in Cable's guns to non-lethal armaments. (Cable: Reloaded v1 #1)

Once, he lost his telepathy and came to use the global infonet as a useful substitute. (X-Men v2 #191)

Through Ship, the infant Nathan was infected whereby the genetic virus caused a progressive degradation of the cohesive structure of his fundamental DNA matrix. This effectively resulted in his cells being unable to replicate themselves with no replacements being generated as a result with no cure known to terrestrial technology. (X-Factor v1 #67)

For a time, he willingly became a host to a Mummudrai parasite called Ev Teel Urizen. (X-Men v2 #198)

One incarnation of him came to wield a sword named the Light of Galador that was forged by the Galadorian Spaceknight. Constructed of Plandanium and an unknown element, it possessed massive amounts of power which Cable could skim with his telekinesis that manifested as lightning as well as plasma energy bolts. Not only was it a conductor of energy but also contained tremendous amount of information. It contained multiple zettabytes and possibly yottabytes of data. (Cable v4 #5)

A particular mode of movement that he used was known as Bodysliding that was an instantaneous transportation of living tissue from any location to a set of pre-programmed coordinates. It was said that the process caused havc to a person's digestive system. Cable triggered a personal transportation by uttering the command 'Bodyslide by One' and when transporting others he would say 'Bodyslide by Two'. (Cable v1 #102)

For a time, his body came to be infected by the Volga Effect that was slowly killing him and forced Cable to be in stasis. To operate, he had his memory engrams transferred and copied onto a thoughtlog that was placed in a clone copy. These copies were only able to operate for a day before they similarly died but for a time they allowed Cable to survive whereby if he died then he simply had his thought engrams placed in a new clone. (X-Force v4 #6)

Cable made use of a large space station called Graymalkin that could place itself in orbit around a world. The markings on its surface and technology could cause earlier time periods to believe it to be of alien origin. It was cloaked from detection making the space station invisible by visual means unless something disrupted this feature. (X-Force v1 #20) Within the station, there were a number of floating robots that helped tend Graymalkin's functions with Cable giving them names such as Scott, Jean and Hank. (X-Force v1 #8) Graymalkin was to serve as a safe haven and a refuge for Cable. (X-Force v1 #17)

From the remains of Graymalkin, he created a floating island called Providence that was kept in the air via anti-gravity generators. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #7)

Graymalkin Station was later reconstituted in secret from technologies seized during the second Great Armor Wars in the 3030s. (Cable v4 #10) After being re-built, he came to refer to the new space station as Graymalkin II. (Cable v4 #11)

Notes

  • Nathan Summers was created by Chris Claremont and Rick Leonardi where he made his first appearance in Uncanny X-Men v1 #201 (January, 1986).
  • The character of Cable was created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefeld where he debuted in New Mutants v1 #87 (March, 1990).
  • On Comics Bulletin!, Rob Liefeld wrote, "I was given a directive to create a new leader for the New Mutants. There was no name, no description besides a 'man of action', the opposite of Xavier. I created the look, the name, much of the history of the character. After I named him Cable, Bob suggested Quinn and Louise had Commander X."

Alternate Versions

  • In the Age of Apocalypse, an alternate version of Nathan Summers was born in a reality designated as Earth-295 with this one being known as Nate Grey.
  • In Extermination v1 #1 (2018), an alternate younger version of Nathan Summers appeared from the same timeline who came to replace his older self.
  • In Major X v1 #1 (2019), an alternate version of Nathan Summers was shown to had inhabit a reality known as the X-Istence. This world was formed in the aftermath of the Mutant Wars where the scattered survivors of Mutants gathered to form a sanctuary from where they formed a new golden age of peace. During this time, Cable had a son named Alexander Nathaniel Summers who by adulthood became an operative for X-Istence known as Major X. Major X travelled to the mainstream Earth after his world collapsed and he sought to find the cause of destruction so he could restore his realm.

During this time, he encountered the supervillain Firefist who was a pyrokinetic that murdered people. One day, Firefist attacked Cable's home and burnt his wife along with his daughter hope leaving their scorched remains behind. This led to Cable using a time travel device to go back in time to the modern day to kill the young Firefist when he was Rusty Collins before his first murder. Upon arriving, he prepared himself and struck at the Mutant prison called the Ice Box but was stopped from killing the boy by Deadpool. After being thwarted, he targeted Wade's associate Weasel to find the location of a convoy that was transporting Rusty to a new facility. He was confronted by Deadpool and Domino who attempted to stop him where during this time Collins freed the Juggernaut from his prison cell. Collins departed alongside the Juggernaut to get his revenge with Cable deciding that he could not handle the powerful supervillain alone thus forcing him to team up with Deadpool. Though Cable wanted to kill the boy, Deadpool convinced him to save Rusty by preventing him from murdering his headmaster which was the act that led to his future incarnation as Firefist. Initially, the attempt failed and Cable shot a bullet at Rusty to kill him but it was intercepted by Deadpool who had used a power dampener to remove his abilities thus making the shot fatal. The act turned Rusty away from his future self as he saw Deadpool saving him with this leading to a changed future where Cable's wife along with their daughter being alive. Cable then used his time travel machine to go back to his earlier self and place a lead bottle cap on Deadpool's chest where the bullet would hit thus saving his life. He was then determined to stay in the modern day and ensure everything was alright before finding a way back to the future.
