At some point, Erza took a mission to slay a colossal horned monster where she succeeded in her goal and looked to claim the horn as a souvenir. While returning home, Erza stopped at a pub where she overheard a group of Mages discussing a sealed Magic called 'Lullaby', with one of the members, Kageyama, claiming he will be able to break the seal. Scarlet did not give them much thought until she heard Kageyama mention Erigor, the 'Death God' and ace of the Dark Guild '''Eisenwald'''. Too late to act against them in time, she decides to enlist Natsu and Gray to help her fight Eisenwald and discover what the Lullaby was as well as what they intend to do with the spell. She returns to the guild with the intention of discussing the matter with Makarov, only to learn that he is away at a meeting with the other guild masters in the country. After ritualistically berating her guildmates for their poor conduct, she tells Natsu and Gray to accompany her on her mission, shocking the entire guild with the idea that she has just formed the strongest team in the history of Fairy Tail. They are joined by Lucy, the guild's newest recruit, who is requested by Mirajane to keep Natsu and Gray from bickering behind Erza's back. Before setting out the next day, Natsu challenges Erza to fight him after they return, which she accepted. Erza discusses her mission with Lucy and Gray of her mission on the train ride to Onibus; Natsu, however, is left in the dark since Erza knocks him unconscious to ease his motion sickness. They are so caught up with their discussion that they accidentally leave Natsu on the train, prompting Erza to temporarily stop the train via its emergency stop signal and chase after him on a borrowed Magic Four-Wheeled Car. Upon retrieving Natsu, he says that he briefly fought with Kageyama, who had escaped, prompting Erza to berate him for not stopping him and paying attention to their discussion. Natsu further explains that the Mage was holding a skull-shaped flute, which Lucy recognizes as the Lullaby, a mass-murder curse that kills anyone who listens to its music.

Desperate to stop Erigor from playing the Lullaby, Erza and the others rush for the nearby town of Oshibana, where they find Eisenwald waiting for them inside the local train station. Before escaping with the Lullaby, Erigor claims to use the Lullaby to kill everyone in the city. Erza sends Natsu and Gray to chase after him while she fights against the members of Eisenwald, easily taking them all out at once. Having used up much of her Magic Power in the fight and on the Magic Four-Wheeled Car, she goes outside to evacuate the citizens gathered around the station. However, Erigor reappears and casts a Wind Wall around the station, trapping Erza inside. She interrogates the defeated Eisenwald members in the station and realizes that Eisenwald's true target is Clover Town, where Makarov and the other guild masters have gathered. Remembering Kageyama's power to dispel Magic, she and Gray find Kageyama after he is defeated by Natsu and demands that he lift the Wind Wall, but he is stabbed in the back by fellow Eisenwald member Karacka to keep him quiet. Fortunately, Lucy acquired the key for the Celestial spirit, Virgo from Happy, allowing the team to burrow beneath the Wind Wall and escape; before doing so, Natsu brings Kageyama, not wanting him to die. Natsu sets out to fight Erigor while Erza and the others chase after him on another Magic Four-Wheeler with Kageyama in tow. By the time they catch up, they find that Natsu has successfully defeated Erigor. However, Kageyama steals the Lullaby and hijacks the vehicle, setting off for Clover Town to kill the guild masters himself. Erza and the others chase after him, but by the time they find him at the masters' meeting hall, they witness Makarov persuading Kageyama to stop his plan. Suddenly, the Lullaby comes to life and unveils a Demon that was sealed inside the flute. Together with Natsu and Gray, Erza battles and destroys the demon, reverting the Lullaby into an ordinary flute, but destroying the entire meeting hall in the process.

Biography

Origin

Erza Scarlet in Fairy Tail v1 #34.

Erza Scarlet (Japanese: エルザ・スカーレット, Hepburn: Eruza Sukāretto) was a human born in Earthland where she was the daughter of Irene Belserion and a general of a foreign country. She was actually conceived 400 years prior to the Dragon King Festival but was kept from growing in her mothers womb through the use of magic. Erza remained unborn when her mother was a dragon until Irene was returned to her human form at the hands of |Zeref. Her mother attempted to become a true human again by enchanting herself onto her unborn child but this failed with Irene considering her daughter Erza to be worthless where she discarded the girl in the back alleys of Rosemary Village. She came to grow up there where she met other children her age such as Simon and Kagura. Whilst still young, the village was attacked by a cult that worshipped Zeref where in the confusion of the attack Erza managed to save Kagura from being captured by hiding her inside a crate. However, she herself came to be captured alongside several other children who were all enslaved as they were brought to a remote island where they were used as slave labour to build the Tower of Heaven. The purpose of the structure was said to help in bringing about the resurrection of the Dark Mage Zeref. Among the imprisoned slaves, she came to encounter Jellal Fernandes, Shô, Simon, Wally Buchanan, and Millianna where she formed a friendship with them. At the time, she only went by the name of Erza with Jellal giving her the last name 'Scarlet' on account of her scarlet hair. Despite harsh conditions, she maintained a close friendship with the other children and a strong bond with an elderly mage named Rob who was from Fairy Tail where he taught her about magic along with his guild. In X776, Shô came up with a plan that would allow the then 11-year-old Erza and all their friends to escape from the tower. However, they would be captured by the guards who looked to punish the mastermind of this attempt with disciplinary action whilst the others would be deprived of food for 3 days. Erza came to see how scared Shô at the time and looked to take the responsibility on herself but Jellal did so before her. Despite that, the guards decided to place the blame on Erza who was taken away to the disciplinary chamber. Whilst there, she was tortured to the brink of death and came to lose her right eye in the process. Jellal looked to save her but was captured as well with Erza being tired of the torment leading to her staging a revolt in order to save him and escape with all the captives. At first, the revolt seemed to be a success the tower's mages arrived to repress the slaves causing many of them to retreat. In this time, Erza came to witness Simon's lower jaw get blasted away by a magic attack whilst Rob sacrificed himself to defend Scarlet from an attack. Succumbing to her rage, Erza's latent magical ability came to activate where she used all the discarded weapons and tools around her against the guards thus allowing them to triumph. Many of the slaves then boarded the ships in order to escape and it was then that Erza was re-united with Jellal but came to find a stark change in his personality. The once kind and compassionate boy was suddenly far more twisted and violent where he used his newly discovered magic to kill any defenseless guards around him. He claimed that he had been possessed by the spirit of Zeref and that the only way to attain true freedom was to complete the Tower of Heaven and use it to revive the dark wizard. Erza would refuse to help him leading to Jellal using a spell to cast her out of the tower where the only reason he let her live was because she helped take out any of the guards that would oppose him. He would tell Erza to never to return and forced her to keep the existence of the Tower of Heaven a secret by threatening to kill everyone she cared about if she disobeyed him.

In the aftermath, she came to leave the island where she found herself washed ashore on Fiore. She then proceeded to make her way to the Fairy Tail guild in order to join their ranks. Out of habit, she began to wear armor to protect herself and acted distant from its other members. Later on, the guild was joined by a boy who was around Erza's age named Gray Fullbuster who one day looked to pick a fight with the elusive Scarlet. However, he instead fond her crying by herself and began to question why she would be so sad. It was after this event that she began to be more open with her guildmates. Around this time, the Fairy Tail guildmaster Makayrov Dreyar brought Erza to the healer Porlyusica who gave her an artificial eye to replace the one she had lost years ago. With her eye healed, Erza began to shed tears of joy from her real left eye. Years later, the guild was joined by other young members including Mirajane Strauss and her siblings. Erza had tried to make Mirajane welcome and noted her strength but the elder Strauss refused to speak a word to Scarlet. Over the years, Erza became somewhat more strict and made herself responsible for discipline over her unruly teammates. This led to her often stepping in to break up the fights between Gray Fullbuster and Natsu Dragneel. She herself though came to be involved in constant fights and bickering with Mirajane Strauss. This only ended when Mirajane experienced the seeming death of her sister Lisanna Strauss causing her to mellow out as she grew older. By X780, Erza took part in Fairy Tail' annual S-Class Mage Promotion Trial where she became the youngest member of the guild to pass it being 15 years old at the time.

Alvarez Empire

Upon the return to Magnolia, they came to find all of Fairy Tails members gathered to reform the guild. Thus, they began to assemble the guild hall once more and decided to name Erza the new guild master as part of a formality with the Magic Council. This was intended to be a temporary measure until master Makarov was found and brought back to the guild. Around this time, Mest returned and was following orders from Makarov which was to take the new guild master to the Lumen Histore that was a closely guarded secret of Fairy Tail. Once there, he revealed a mission that Makarov had sent him on which was to infiltrate the Magic Council and learn everything about the Alvarez Empire. In the years that followed, Mest secretly reported back to Makarov and by the time of the Tartaros attack it was discovered that the mighty empire was preparing to invade Fiore. To stop this, Makarov decided to journey to the country and conduct negotiations to convince the empire against this course of action. Furthermore, he decided to disband Fairy Tail as he was aware that the Alvarez Empire sought out the Lumen Histore and that by breaking up the guild Makarov felt like he was protecting his children from being targets. After learning of this, Erza and a select number of Fairy Tail members decided to travel secretly into the Alvarez Empire in order to find and recover master Makarov.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Erza Scarlet was a young human woman with long, scarlet hair and brown eyes where she had a slender voluptuous figure that Lucy Heartfilia described as being 'amazing'.
