(Deadpool and Death Annual v1 #1998) | + | According to one account, Wade Wilson was a military brat born in Ohio. His father was an officer in the Army and the family moved around a lot between military bases in America and Canada. Wade's home life became more difficult once his mother contracted cancer and died when he was only five years old. The distance between Wade and his father grew, and by the time he was a teenager Wade was acting out and hanging with a disreputable crowd. Wade's father came to a pool hall one day to bring his son home, but Wade resisted. One of Wade's punk friends attacked Mr. Wilson with a beer bottle, then grabbed his sidearm and shot him. Wade watched his father bleed out and die on the floor of the pool hall, never resolving the issues between them. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #19) However, another story indicated Wade's parents were still alive. In this scenario, Wade Wilson was raised alone by his mother and never knew his father. He grew up as a punk who often got into trouble leading to his mother smacking him around whilst at home. During these years, she never told Wade about who his real father was according to this account. (Deadpool v2 #36) |

+ | On one occasion, Wilson traveled to Asia to forget a job gone bad in Tangiers, involving the loss of someone close to him named Frankie. He was hired by a Yakuza oyabun known simply as 'Boss'. Wilson was given a large sum of money to infiltrate the heya sumo training school of a noted wrestler called the Oyakata, and await further instructions. The training was brutal at first because Wilson's existing muscle and moves did not suit the sumo style. He spent months building mass and finally slapped the Oyakata in a training match, a sign of great skill. The Oyakata's young daughter Sazae named him Chiyonosake, the Wolf of the Rice Wine. Wilson was accepted into the heya and the Oyakata had plans for him to marry Sazae, passing on the sumo school to Chiyonosake when he died. After three years, however, Boss re-emerged and told Wilson his true mission: kill the Oyakata. Wilson felt he could not go through with the assignment, but neither could he stay. He snuck out of the heya in the middle of the night and left, despite Sazae's protestations when she caught him. (Deadpool Team-Up v1 #1)

+ | Wilson was given a terminal diagnosis as cancer cells were found propagating throughout his body. The revelation threw off what little moral balance he had found. For a mission in Zaire, he was hired to eliminate a single target in the midst of a British black ops site. Instead of going in quiet, Wilson slaughtered his way through the entire base, but came up short when he met the target herself, an old blind woman named Althea. Wade let her go, for reasons even he may not fully understand. [Deadpool v2 #-1) Wade apparently sunk deeper into the mercenary business, becoming even colder and more brutal than he was before meeting Vanessa. He attempted to find treatment for his cancer, but the chemo made him feel too weak, and so he stopped. He was then recruited for the Canadian special weapons development branch known as Department K. Wilson was suffering from cancer at the time and took part in experiments undertaken by Weapon X. This saw castoffs being gifted superhuman powers and thus the potential to become a superhero. (Deadpool and Death Annual v1 #1998)
As a result, he became the second iteration of the Weapon X program where among his fellow recruits was Garrison Kane. (Deadpool: The Circle Chase v1 #3) This saw the distillation of a Mutant Healing Factor from one agent and implanting it into another which in this case was Wilson. (Deadpool and Death Annual v1 #1998) Dr. Killebrew told Wade that the experiment would give him regenerative powers that would last forever. (Deadpool: Sins of the Past v1 #1)

+ | However, the full ramifications of Wade's healing factor soon became apparent. Every cell in his body was rendered hyper-regenerative, including the existing cancer cells. His body soon became a scarred and rippling mass of tumors and malignant tissue. Worse, his horrific turn of fate led the Weapon X Program to declare him a failure and toss him to the reject pile of test subjects known as the Workshop. Killebrew made just as much use of the washouts as he did the successes, using the disposable test subjects on hand for a variety of experiments testing the limits of human pain and suffering. He was assisted by the Attending, a handsome and successful graduate of Department K's program who was nevertheless considered too psychological unstable for hero work. Wade entered the Workshop in a state of suicidal depression. His healing factor no longer seemed to be working, and the tumors made his flesh hideous. He was greeted by Worm Cunningham and the other cast-offs of the Weapon X Program. Worm tried to keep his fellow test subjects' spirits up by hosting 'the deadpool', where they placed odds on when each of the rejects would die in Killebrew's experiments or kill themselves because of their condition. Despite his suicidal tendencies, Wilson got long odds in the deadpool because Killebrew took an early liking to Wade for experimentation. The Attending frequently had to stop Wade's attempts at killing himself, as one of Killebrew's few rules in the Workshop was that no one was allowed to kill his test subjects but him. Wade Wilson's urge to die became so strong that he actually summoned Mistress Death herself before his time had come. While Thanos famously loved Death as a concept, glorifying her name through the cosmos, Wilson's affection for death was more personal and intimate, leading her to manifest and speak to him in ways she never did for Thanos. Seeing his death as a beautiful thing to achieve, Wade redoubled his efforts to die and change his odds in the deadpool. He finally found an edge when he learned the Attending's real name was Francis, and that he hated his name. Wade began a campaign of taunts and ridicule designed to push A-Man's buttons into killing him, but the Attending always held back because even he could not kill one of Killebrew's test subjects without consequences. An unintended side effect of Wade's efforts was the Attending losing face with the other rejects. He could no longer command the fear and respect he had before Wilson's slapstick pranks and jokes. Wade unexpectedly became something of a hero figure to the Workshop, restoring hope to the cynical cellmates. Still, Wade violently rejected the idea when Worm tried to thank him, insisting that his efforts to die were purely selfish. (Deadpool and Death Annual v1 #1998)
+ | |||
+ | Eventually, Francis found a way to get revenge on Wilson. He instituted a new displaced punishment standard, declaring that Wade's defiance and disobedience would be taken out on his friends instead. The Attending had Worm Cunningham strapped up to a lobotomy machine, and tried to force Wade to tow the line. Worm refused to give in, though, and he rightly told Wade the Attending was going to axe him anyways. Wilson remained defiant and mocking of Francis, and so Worm was lobotomized. Wilson mercy-killed his friend so he did not have to live in suffering, which was Francis's plan all along. Wade had killed a test subject and, because of Killebrew's own rules, Wade now had to die. Francis and the doctor performed one last experiment on Wade, until his heart was literally ripped from his chest. Wilson was finally reunited with Mistress Death, but his death didn't take. His unprecedented rage at Francis and the situation reignited his will to live and his latent healing factor. Wade turned his back on Death in order to take revenge on the Attending, and his mind snapped as a result. He abandoned his previous identity as Wade Wilson and named himself the final winner of the deadpool. While Wade was twisted and damaged by circumstances, Deadpool was truly insane. He armed himself and brutally took out the Workshop guards, pressing on to confront Killebrew and the Attending. The doctor fled, but Francis remained and Deadpool blasted out his chest with a pair of automatic machine guns. With the side of Department K blown open during the melee, the surviving rejects and test subjects escaped into the world thanks to Deadpool. Francis seemingly died at Deadpool's feet, but he died laughing. The A-Man pointed out that, even though his healing factor was active, Wilson's face was still a mess of tumors and scar tissue. He would live, but he would live as a freak. (Deadpool and Death Annual v1 #1998)

+ | In the service of Mr. Tolliver, Wade settled into a comfortable role as the crime lord's top enforcer. Deadpool spent an unknown period of time, possibly years, in Tolliver's employ. During this time, Vanessa also began working for Tolliver. Under unknown circumstances, Tolliver blackmailed Vanessa into working for him while also temporarily misleading Wade into believing Tolliver had had Vanessa murdered. It is unknown if Wade and Vanessa worked together with Tolliver before her faked death, or if Wade only learned Vanessa was in Tolliver's employ later. (Deadpool: The Circle Chase v1 #4)

+ | Despite his need, however, Wade soon found he could not bear to have Killebrew touch him again. The idea of submitting to tests and needles inside Killebrew's laboratory, even ostensibly for his own benefit, was too traumatic to cope with. Deadpool abandoned Killebrew and ran from his past. (Deadpool v2 #4) Backsliding a bit as a result of this confrontation, Deadpool decided he could not let Vanessa move on without him. He tracked Vanessa and her new boyfriend Kane to San Francisco in a childish effort to stamp out them and their happiness. His tantrum was interrupted by Wolverine, the original Weapon X, and Wade soon fled without having achieved his goals. [Wolverine v2 #88)

− | Wilson | + | Wilson travelled back to New York with the idea that Osborn should have paid him for that intel he transmitted during the Secret Invasion, and attempted to break into the Avengers tower. Osborn had been ready for him with a trap, and sent the Thunderbolts to intercept him. Deadpool managed to disable all of the Thunderbolts with the exception of Black Widow, who he began to fall for. While professing his love, he was shot by Paladin and escaped. He teleported to the Taskmaster's 'Unoccupied office building' where he regrouped and got the bullets out of his body whilst telling "Tasky" about how much he adored Black Widow and his plan for two Deadpools. (Deadpool v4 #8) Hiring a plane to fly a banner professing his love for "BW" as well as his phone number, Taskmaster was able to pinpoint the call made to that number to find the Thunderbolt's headquarters. The Thunderbolts used the call to find Taskmaster's position as well, believing him to be Deadpool. As they left to intercept him, Deadpool called their number and flirted with Widow while he shot at them from the plane. Crashing the plane and losing that phone, he teleported back to Taskmaster to get a new phone before teleporting directly to her, since she wasn't with her team. While fighting and kissing her, he managed to ask Taskmaster (dressed as Deadpool) to stall her team while he spent time with her. After losing Rock-Paper-Scissors, Deadpool had to instead take care of the Thunderbolts while Taskmaster went after Black Widow. Taskmaster was captured by her, and was about to have his head cut off by Headsman when Wade rescued him. Osborn wanted to see Deadpool killed, and was in attendance when Taskmaster was about to have his head chopped, so Deadpool went after him after releasing Taskmaster. Wade nearly had Osborn when Black Widow shot him through the heart, enabling Headsman to cut off his head. After recovering, Deadpool thanked Taskmaster for his help by paying him via ATM using Osborn's wallet. Taskmaster claimed he didn't put Wade's head back on, and Deadpool believed it was Widow's way of telling him she loved him back. He would later pop up behind Osborn during a national television appearance holding a sign that said, "Respawn lol". (Deadpool v4 #9) |

− | He was later hired by Warren Worthington III and dispatched to find Clan Akkaba that were operating in the shadows. (Wolverine: Road to Hell v1 #1) Wilson managed to discover their hidden headquarters and witness a ceremony made by the secret society where they performed a sacrifice in order to create a young clone of their leader Apocalypse. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #1) During the mission, he was attacked and captured with the Akkaba scientists studying him until X-Force arrived to free him where they proceeded with their mission to eliminate Apocalypse. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #2) The team consisted of Angel, Psylocke, Wolverine, and Fantomex where they pursued their target to the Moon only to fight the boy's protectors who were the Final Horsemen. Their craft was shot down on the surface of the Moon with Wade protecting Angel who was injured in the crash. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #3) He helped Warren recover with the two departing towards Ship and infiltrated it where they entered its inner chambers. Within the sanctum, they found their target only to see that Apocalypse was in the form of an innocent young boy. Psylocke and Wolverine intended to take the boy away to be raised in peace with this being opposed by Angel who wanted to kill the child before he became Apocalypse. Ultimately, he came to realise his actions namely the murder of a child and agreed with his compatriots in taking the boy away. However, Fantomex shot a bullet into the young En Sabah Nur's head thus killing the child whereupon the team was forced to quickly escape on E.V.A. before Ship teleported to a new site. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #4) After one of their first missions, which ended with the team killing Apocalypse, who was reincarnated as an innocent child, Deadpool called a meeting to discuss his moral doubts about killing a child. During this meeting, Archangel told Wolverine that, despite being employed by Archangel for over a year, Deadpool never cashed any of the checks for his services. During this meeting, Archangel told Wolverine that, despite being employed by Archangel for over a year, Deadpool never cashed any of the checks for his services. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #5) Wade later received a call for help from Gateway where it was learnt that Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers were planning to strike at Utopia. Deadpool joined X-Force as they looked to prevent the attack from taking place. Arriving at Australia, they learnt that the Reavers were planning a suicide attack and had threatened Gateway's tribe to open a portal to the Mutant enclave. X-Force went in pursuit and kept their activities a secret whilst eliminating all the Reavers. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #5.1)
+ | Afterwards, Fantomex found himself targeted by a group of Deathloks based on various superheroes. It was learnt that these undead cyborgs were from a possible future where they had been used to eliminate all superheroes of their world. They had travelled to their past in order to instigate their plans which involved claiming the laboratory known as The World which was in Fantomex's possession. Within the facility, there resided a scientist known as Father who had a part to play in bringing about Operation: Deathlok. To prevent this, X-Force enlarged the shrunken laboratory and went to confront Father. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #6) The team came to split up where Deadpool managed to find Father only to fall under the villains influence. Meanwhile, the rest of the team faced Deathlok counterparts of the team. Father nearly succeeded but when he claimed that he was "proud" of Deadpool it snapped Wade to his senses and he decapitated the villain. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #7) Deadpool was then dispatched to scout an army base after Psylocke detected psychic emanations from the site. It was revealed that this was the actions of the Shadow King who came to take control of X-Force when they confronted him. Turning the team against each other, he would battle Betsy Braddock on the psychic plain. A mind controlled Deadpool was sent to kill Psylocke whilst her mind was fighting the Shadow King but he was rendered unconscious by Fantomex. The Shadow King came to be defeated when he unleashed the dormant Archangel in Warren Worthington III's mind. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #8) After returning from a mission, the team were confronted in their base at Cavern-X by Magneto who had learnt of the existence of the team. However, he had required Wolverine for a personal assignment with Logan agreeing on the condition he maintain X-Force's covert existence. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #9) An incident later emerged when Archangel learnt that a Guardian journalist named Harper Simmons had learnt of X-Forces attack on the army base and looked to publish the story. He then acted independently to kill Simmons with X-Force stopping him with Harper's mind having all trace of X-Force removed from it by Psylocke. It was then learnt that the recent actions of Worthington were the result of the Death Seed implanted in him by Apocalypse. This resulted in Archangel being transformed into Apocalypse's successor and resulted in a stark change in his personality. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #10)

Thanos had long been angry at Deadpool for being the object of Lady Death's affections and, unknown to the mercenary, had cursed him with the inability to be killed, thereby preventing Wade from ever uniting with her. When Lady Death went missing, causing all creatures in the universe to become immortal, Deadpool accused Thanos of responsibility, stole a starship from Cable and confronted him. Thanos rescinded his curse, turning Wade into the only mortal creature in the universe and killed him for his impudence. However, Thanos soon realised that Wade was now the only being who could communicate with Death and was forced to bring him back to life so that they could find her. (Deadpool vs. Thanos v1 #1) Together, they learned that Eternity had taken Lady Death and entered its realm to rescue her. This was Death's plan all along though - to push Thanos to destroy Eternity on her behalf, thereby causing the death of reality. To stop this from occurring, Deadpool was briefly gifted with the Uni-Power, turning him into Captain Universe, thereby giving him the means to defeat Thanos. Biography
Origin
Wade Wilson is a man living with cancer, who went through a procedure and made him become the Merc with a Mouth.
According to one account, Wade Wilson was a military brat born in Ohio. (Deadpool v2 #36)
On one occasion, Wilson traveled to Asia to forget a job gone bad in Tangiers, involving the loss of someone close to him named Frankie.
Wilson was given a terminal diagnosis as cancer cells were found propagating throughout his body.
However, the full ramifications of Wade's healing factor soon became apparent.
Eventually, Francis found a way to get revenge on Wilson.
Deadpool
In the service of Mr.
He was hired by Mr. Tolliver and paid to eliminate the Mutant Cable. Deadpool managed to ambush his quarry and even fought off several of his New Mutant students but was defeated by Domino. Rather than kill him, Cable sent the mercenary back to Tolliver for him to deal with the failure in the mission. (New Mutants v1 #98)
Wilson was later at the Hellhouse when it was attacked by mercenaries targeting him. Despite killing some of them, he came to be frozen and was nearly taken away until he was saved by Banshee along with his daughter Siryn. (Deadpool v1 #1)
Despite his need, however, Wade soon found he could not bear to have Killebrew touch him again.
He came to be abducted by information brokers looking for a cure for the Legacy Virus where he was rescued by Wolverine and the mercenary Maverick. (Wolverine Annual v1 #1995)
Wilson had taken a job to assassinate a person when he was approached by Sabretooth who was recruiting for a reborn Weapon X program. Deadpool at first refused but Creed would not take a refusal and threatened to kill Wade. This led to a fight between the pair where Deadpool was surprised to see that Weapon X had improved Sabretooth's abilities namely his healing factor and claws. After being nearly killed, Wade decided to take Creed up on the offer and went to the Weapon X compound where he was introduced to its mysterious leader the Director. (Deadpool v3 #57)
Cable and Deadpool
Wilson travelled back to New York with the idea that Osborn should have paid him for that intel he transmitted during the Secret Invasion, and attempted to break into the Avengers tower. (Deadpool v4 #9)
Deadpool Corps
Uncanny X-Force
He was later hired by Warren Worthington III and dispatched to find Clan Akkaba that were operating in the shadows.
Afterwards, Fantomex found himself targeted by a group of Deathloks based on various superheroes.
Looking to save Warren, X-Force decided to free Dark Beast from a prison transport in secret. Through him, they learnt of the nature of the Death Seed where he deemed that a cure existed but it required him to access his laboratory in the Age of Apocalypse. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #10)
Thunderbolts
Deadpool vs. Carnage
Using his medium awareness, he then decided to hunt down the notorious serial killer Carnage. This saw him him attacking Cletus Kasady where he managed to subdue the villain using dubstep. (Deadpool vs. Carnage v1 #1)
Deadpool vs. Thanos
During the fight, Wade managed to convince Death of the validity of life and to abandon her murderous plans. (Deadpool vs. Thanos v1 #4)
Uncanny Avenger
During this time, he came to join the Avengers Unity Division where he used his newfound fame and wealth to fund the team. (Deadpool v6 #1)
Later on, he came to learn that Solo had impersonated him on a job. This led to him coming up with the idea of forming a team of mercenaries called the Mercs for Money whose reach extended across the world. Around this time, his newfound popularity meant that he had to leave his family behind as he feared his enemies would endanger them. Deadpool also came to join the ranks of the Avengers Unity Division where he used his popularity and merchandising to help fund the team. (Deadpool v6 #1)
Despicable Deadpool
Steve Rogers later gave Deadpool a mission to hunt down and kill agent Phil Coulson. (Deadpool v6 #31)
Return
Carnage later sought to capture him in order to claim the Symbiote codex fragments left in his spine after he was host to the different Klyntar. (Absolute Carnage vs. Deadpool v1 #3)
King of the Monsters
After Deadpool was hired to kill the Monster King who had invaded Staten Island, he teamed up with Elsa Bloodstone in order to accomplish this task, and upon succeeding he became the new king of the monsters, in accordance with an old Monster Law. (Deadpool v8 #1) One of his first acts was giving hospitality to the Strikeforce that had arrived in the monster kingdom. (Strikeforce v1 #7) Wade's first goal as their king was for monsters to live in peace alongside humans, but, after Captain America told Wade that he needed take the monsters out of the island in order to avoid casualties, Deadpool refused and instead declared 'war' between humans and monsters. (Deadpool v8 #2)
After she informed Deadpool that she was dying, the duo went to Greenland, where she explained to him that her bloodstone had been infected by some creatures called the Bone Beast, causing her to slowly begin dying. There, they battled some of the creatures invading a village, but discovered the Bone Beasts had already taken the children. They then entered a portal in the sky and arrived at the Bone Beasts' dimension, where the Bone Beast Queen awaited intending to make Deadpool her new host. (Deadpool v8 #7) Despite feeling betrayed by Elsa, who he had started developing feelings for, Deadpool fought to escape and save the children, but when she collapsed due to her infection, he removed the bloodstone from her hand and placed it on himself. He fought the Queen while Elsa took the children through the portal back home and, once they were all safe, he blew himself up. After, Elsa came back to check on him, she found his detached head on the floor next to her infection-free bloodstone. After taking it back, she shot a powerful beam from her hand and defeated the Queen, who was still alive, once and for all. After this, Elsa took Deadpool's head to look after him while he regenerated. (Deadpool v8 #9)

Notes
- Deadpool was created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld where he made his first appearance in New Mutants v1 #98 (February, 1991).
- At a talk, it was said that the inspiration for Deadpool's name comes from the 1988 Dirty Harry film The Dead Pool.
- In an interview in Forbes, Liefeld said, "Wolverine and Spider-Man were the two properties I was competing with at all times. I didn't have those, I didn't have access to those. I had to make my own Spider-Man and Wolverine. That's what Cable and Deadpool were meant to be, my own Spider-Man and my own Wolverine."
- Writer Fabian Nicieza commented on the characters sexuality, "Not trying to be dismissive, but readers always want to 'make a character their own', and often that is to the exclusion of what the character might mean to other fans. I've been dogged with the DP sexuality questions for YEARS. It is a bit tiring. He is NO sex and ALL sexes. He is yours and everyone else's. So not dismissive, but rather the epitome of inclusive."
- In Uncanny X-Force v1 #1 (2010), according to Clan Akkaba scientists it was noted that Weapon Plus had gone outside the hyper-nova discipline for Deadpool.
- In Deadpool v3 #34 (2014), following the Inversion the character was briefly referred to as Zenpool.

- In Amazing Spider-Man Annual v1 #38 (2011), an alternate version of Wade Wilson appeared in the Perfect World reality that was designated Earth-11638 in the Multiverse. In this world, a revolutionary procedure was performed by Reed Richards that removed the lethal brain tumor from Wilson's brain. A side effect of this was that Wilson became a super-genius and used his new-found intellect to erect a criminal empire. This saw him beginning to wear armor stylized after Doctor Doom and went by Death Mask. Meanwhile, the disbanding of the Fantastic Four broke the sanity of that reality's Victor von Doom who began wearing a green version of Deadpool's costume where he took the name Deathwish.
