History
The Death Star was a moon-sized space station that was an incredibly powerful weapon developed by the Galactic Empire. Its origins were traced to the Clone Wars where plans for the weapons were being developed on Geonosis. These came to be hidden following the outbreak of hostilities between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. By the end of the war, the Separatists were defeated and the Republic came to be re-organised by newly crowned Emperor Palpatine where it became the first Galactic Empire. It was then that construction began on the gigantic space station superweapon that was to be the Death Star. Eventually, teams of scientists were gathered by Orson Krennic who was the Director of Advanced Weapons Research with oversight on it being made by Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. Details on the station came to be maintained under Project: Stardust that was stored on the archives on Scarif. One of the scientists attached to the project was Galen Erso who later left in order to find peace in civilian life along with his family. Many years later, the project began to stall leading to Director Krennic forcibly recruiting Galen back onto the program after killing his wife.
It intended as the weapon that would annihilate the Rebel Alliance. The moon-sized Death Star could unleash enough destructive power through its main weapon to destroy entire planets.
The original Death Star was used to destroy Princess Leia Organa's planet of Alderaan before it was destroyed by the rebels; in particular, by targeted explosives launched by new X-Wing pilot Luke Skywalker.
A new Death Star was built over the next few years, more powerful with an impenetrable defensive shield. This second Death Star was narrowly destroyed by a rebel assault, during which Lando Calrissian led an attack on the Death Star's core.
In the years afterwards, the Empire collapsed and the First Order was established in its wake who created their own superweapon known as Starkiller Base.
Overview
In appearance, the Death Star was a moon-sized spherical mobile space station.
A single reactor ignition was powerful enough to devastate a large section of a planet.
