Sergeant Marcus Johnson in Battle Scars v1 #6.

Nicholas Fury Junior was the son of noted spy Colonel Nick Fury and former CIA agent Nia Marie Johnson following a romance the pair had thirty years ago following a mission against Hydra in Czechoslovakia. She became pregnant from the encounter and retired from her job as she decided to keep the child with her keeping the pregnancy a secret from Nick Fury despite their short affair. This led to her being in danger from Nick Fury's enemies with him helping her disappear from the world by giving her a new identity in an effort to protect both her and the child. After his birth, he was given the name Marcus Johnson to better hide his true identity from the rest of the world. (Battle Scars v1 #5) By adulthood, he enlisted in the military and joined the ranks of the U.S. Army Rangers where he rose to the position of Staff Sergeant. At this point, he met a fellow soldier who nick named Cheese who he regarded as his best friend. Around this time, Marcus was deployed to Afghanistan and was part of the peacekeeping operations in that country. The situation at the air base he was stationed at went out of control due to the global spread of fear by the Asgardian known as the Serpent. During this time, he was informed that his mother was killed leading to him returning to America for the first time in a year to attend her funeral. He later went to his family home to remember his mother when it came under attack from Taskmaster. Johnson was wounded when he was saved by the intervention of Captain America and Army soldiers that arrived on the scene. (Battle Scars v1 #1)

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Nick Fury, Jr. in Marvel NOW! Point One v1 #1.

Fury was pulled from the Leviathan operation for an assignment by Acting Director Maria Hill (Marvel NOW! Point One v1 #1) Hill then recruited him to be part of her Secret Avengers initiative and he was given the name of Agent Nick Fury. (Secret Avengers v1 #1) Nick Fury, Jr. later went to Bagalia to free Taskmaster and recruit him into the Secret Avengers. (Secret Avengers v2 #2) He later attended a weapon convention in the U.S. alongside Director Johnson with this being interrupted by A.I.M. who killed a senator that opposed them. (Secret Avengers v2 #3) In response, Johnson had the Secret Avengers initiative deployed against the A.I.M. Island of Barbuda with Agent Fury being among the operatives sent to assassinate the Scientist Supreme Andrew Forson. (Secret Avengers v2 #4) Afterwards, the planet was invaded by the forces of the Mad Titan Thanos with this event seeing the detonation of the Terrigen Bomb that activated the Inhuman genes amongst the human populace. As a result, a number of people gained superpowers due to one of their ancestors having been an Inhuman. Among them was S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sarah Garza who was used as a superhuman operative with her being sent alongside Agent Coulson and Fury to fight the alien invaders. (Secret Avengers v2 #10) They were then attacked by a newly activated Inhuman who was in a mad state after emerging from the cocoon and blamed superheroes for bringing constant destruction to the planet. The S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives managed to regroup where they attempted to calm him down but the Inhuman Gavrel refused and attacked Nick Fury, Jr. This forced Agent Garza to enter into the fray where she came to disarm the man after which Fury took the shot and killed him as he stated he could not risk the man turning on them again. The incident was traumatic for Sarah Garza who then decided to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. as she could not come to terms with Gavrel dying in her arms. (Secret Avengers v2 #11) Afterwards, S.H.I.E.L.D. came to learn of a hidden A.I.M. submarine facility from a splinter group led by M.O.D.O.K. with Fury along with the Secret Avengers being sent to destroy the site. However, they were captured but managed to escape where they came to flee the facility. (Secret Avengers v2 #15)

He was later present during the debriefing of the new Captain America Sam Wilson after Steve Rogers lost his powers and retired from being a superhero. At the time, Wilson was sent on an assignment to track down a resurgent Hydra that had gathered under the leadership of Baron Zemo. Helmut Zemo had intended to use a bomb to sterilise the human race except for loyal Hydra members who possessed the antidote. Sam was hostile to Nick Fury, Jr. as he did not trust S.H.I.E.L.D. and inquired about whether their operative Misty Knight had brought in one of their captives. However, Fury revealed that Misty was not working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and was missing from action at the time. (All-New Captain America v1 #6)

Though S.H.I.E.L.D. was disbanded, Fury continued to operate as a spy and sought to ensure that its mistakes were cleaned up in the hope that eventually the agency would be restored. He came to learn that Rutherford Winner of Hydra's Pygamlion project was still operating freelance with the man intending to force someone to kill him as S.H.I.E.L.D. had refused to undo the mental conditioning to his mind. This saw Fury attempting to track him down and eliminate him as he was one of the dark secrets from his father Nick Fury's time. During this time, he encountered the Daughters of the Dragon who had become targets of Winner who had been hired on behalf of someone to eliminate the two vigilantes. (Daughters of the Dragon - Marvel Digital Original v1 #2)

He began to observe the activities of Frank Castle who was killing Hydra agents at an abandoned warehouse as his way of atoning for siding with Hydra during the Secret Empire. (Secret Empire Omega v1 #1) Fury was responsible for giving Castle access to War Machine armor for a deniable operation against a rogue Eastern European state that was using old S.H.I.E.L.D. resources. (Punisher v1 #218)

Afterwards, he heard that Maria Hill had been killed with evidence indicating that Taskmaster was the culprit when his shield was found at the scene. Fury decided to investigate the matter himself and came to learn that the Black Widow intended to assassinate the mercenary. He came to find Taskmaster running a job for a Maggia member when he had to flee the scene after being targeted by a sniper who was Romanoff. Nick Fury tapped into Taskmasters communications and offered him a means of escape which he took with the secret agent knowing at that moment that the mercenary was not Hill's murderer. He revealed that he had been framed and that Fury intended to find the truth which was tied to the mysterious Rubicon Trigger. However, he could not access the information as it required the kinesic signature of other top spymasters that included Phil Coulson, Okoye and Ami Han with Taskmaster working to replicate their movements. (Taskmaster v3 #1)

Afterwards, his investigations on global events determined that an unknown new player was operating on the global scene with Nick Fury, Jr. looking to uncover this hidden threat. (Iron Man Annual v6 #1) He later had a meeting with Captain America where Steve Rogers indicated an extinction level threat that matched those dangers on the Abaddon Index. Steve Rogers informed him that this threat came from the Infinity Stones who were now bonded to living beings as their vessels. Captain America had was only aware of two of the wielders with Fury being worried that some unknown force was bringing the Infinity Stones together. (Captain America Annual v3 #1)

Following his capture by Orion, followers from Leviathan were responsible for slashing his left eye and plucking out the eyeball thus making him lose that eye. (Battle Scars v1 #5)

Originally, as a soldier he knew what to expect from life but this changed when he started his life as a spy with him having to adapt to the changing circumstances. (Iron Man Annual v6 #1) Fury believed that the world needed S.H.I.E.L.D. no matter what people thought of the organization. Thus, when it was disbanded, he sought to ensure that the hidden mistakes of his father never resurfaced as it would mean that the agency would return quickly. Thus, he came to consider the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. and his father Nick Fury to be his legacy. It was this reason that he worked as a spy to clean up those mistakes and ensure that they never affected the organization. (Daughters of the Dragon - Marvel Digital Original v1 #2)

He deeply cared for his mother to the point that he believed that a world without her made no sense. According to him, everything that he was due to her and that she was all he had in the world. (Battle Scars v1 #1) He had said that he never learnt from his father but rather from his mother who was as good a spy as Nick Fury. She taught Nick Fury, Junior. to focus himself and look for patterns allowing him to find the important details. This talent served him well in school and even on the battlefield with it later being invaluable in his life as a spy. (Iron Man Annual v6 #1)

Phil Coulson or Cheese he regarded as being his best friend. (Battle Scars v1 #1) He said that Coulson kept him sane. (Marvel NOW! Point One v1 #1)

Fury said that he respected Maria Hill as a mentor as she taught him everything he knew. (Taskmaster v3 #1)

Powers and abilities

A particular talent taught to him by his mother was being able to pick out important details when searching through information. (Iron Man Annual v6 #1)

His body had inherited the Infinity Formula from his father and it became a natural part of his genetic structure. This meant that he was naturally a bit stronger and faster than other humans along with greater endurance for injuries. (Battle Scars v1 #5)

After being recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D., he operated as a Field Agent though said that he was not trained in enhanced interrogation. (Marvel NOW! Point One v1 #1)

• Nick Fury, Jr. was created by Matt Fraction, Chris Yost, Scot Eaton, Cullen Bunn, and Paul Neary where he made his first appearance in Battle Scars v1 #1 (January, 2012).
• The character was seemingly based on the Ultimate Marvel Nick Fury and the Nick Fury from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
• In an interview on CBR, Chris Yost said, "So ‘Battle Scars’ was born, but the idea of a new Nick Fury Jr. character that was more like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Nick Fury and the Nick Fury we’re seeing now in animation came from the top. It was something that they knew they wanted to do and this was how we were going to do it As far as the details go, I fleshed out who Marcus was. I came up with his name, his mother, and their backstory. So the idea for Nick Fury’s son came from the top and the details of Marcus Johnson came after that."
• Similarly, editor Tom Brevoort noted on Newsarama that, "And yet, the Marvel Universe Nick Fury is a storied character, he's been around forever, close to 50 years at this point. It's not like you can just have another guy come in and step into his shoes. That's not really what we're doing here with Marcus, per se, but we are building a newer, younger, more active Nick who can be closer, at least visually, to the incarnation that people know from other media... I'm pretty sure it was Joe Quesada who first started the conversation going, the notion that maybe Nick could have a son out there somewhere that we didn't know about, who would become our "new Nick Fury."
