History

Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot from Dark Avengers v1 #1.

The Iron Patriot was a suit of Iron Man Armor that was created in the wake of the Secret Invasion. After the defeat of the Skrull's, the alien queen Veranke was killed by Norman Osborn who was hailed as a hero of Earth for ending the threat. This saw Tony Stark being removed from his position as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the peacekeeping organization disbanded. It was replaced with H.A.M.M.E.R. with Osborn placed in charge of it where he quickly consolidated control along with laying claim to any technology including StarkTech. After taking custody of Stark Tower, he discovered a hidden vault that he could not access with Osborn hiring the Ghost to break through security. Inside, he found various suits of Iron Man Armor where he retrofitted one to become the Iron Patriot which he wore in his role as leader of the Dark Avengers who he had assembled to be the planet's greatest heroes. (Dark Avengers v1 #1)

It was later revealed that Norman was recreating the armor in a workshop under Oscorp Tower. The armor, along with the workshop, was destroyed by Max Modell after Peter Parker distracted both Hobgoblins Roderick Kingsley and Phil Urich by 'pretending' to be Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #697)

Whilst investigating the sighting of the New Avengers, the Iron Patriot along with the Dark Avengers arrived to see the Hood's gang of supervillains that were attempting to forge their own deal with Osborn. Norman refused at first but Jonas Harrow used a wormhole virus to shutdown the Iron Patriot armor and also used a Power Drainer that depowered the Dark Avengers alongside the New Avengers. (New Avengers v1 #56) Harrow used this as an opportunity create a deal with Osborn who agreed to the terms with Jonas reactivating the Iron Patriot armor for Norman. (New Avengers v1 #57)

After H.A.M.M.E.R. disbanded, the U.S. Department of Defense acquired the agency's proprietary hardware and modified it with a basic-level artificial intelligence for use as part of a drone fleet. It was showcased at a weapons expo that was interrupted by the new Scientist Supreme Andrew Forson who stole the armour. (Secret Avengers v2 #3) The drones had their artificial intelligence enhanced by A.I.M. with them armed with information on threats from the S.H.I.E.L.D. database. (Secret Avengers v2 #4) The drone fleet then began targeting these sites around the world with this causing an international accident. In an effort to stop them, agent Phil Coulson requested the assistance of James Rhodes who arrived at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Tages research station. Once there, he linked with the Iron Patriot drones through holographic terminal where the A.I.s had recognised Rhodes as the 'pilot'. He then used his authority as a military officer to pull the Iron Patriots in line that accepted him as their commander. One of the armours equipped itself on Rhodes who led them in the field. (Secret Avengers v2 #6) He led them in a strike against the A.I.M. island of Barbuda where the drones helped the Secret Avengers escape from the fortress. (Secret Avengers v2 #7)

Toni Ho built a new version of the Iron Patriot armor that was outfitted with non-lethal weaponry which she used as she joined the new U.S. Avengers that was working alongside the United States Government. (U.S.Avengers v1 #1)

Overview

The armor was capable of forming itself around the wearer. (All-New Savage She-Hulk v1 #3)

From the arms, several small rockets could be fired at a target. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #599)

On the chest, the circular emitter for the uni-beam was altered into a star-shaped pattern which actually reduced the effectiveness of the energy blast from it. (Dark Reign: The List - Amazing Spider-Man v1 #1)

It could create force fields to block from attacks. (Dark Avengers v1 #3)
