Biography

The Pact

Agent Orange.

Larfleeze was a humanoid extraterrestrial who was an inhabitant of the planet Ogatoo. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

Billions of years ago, he was part of a gang of five thieves who travelled to the planet Maltus where they stole several items from a vault. This caused them to be pursued by Manhunter androids who killed Chattle but the rest managed to escape. Among the contents was a box that was worth a star system and a map that spoke of an even greater treasure. The map once belonged to Krona who spoke of a treasure located in the Vega system. Travelling to Okaara, the group went in search for the temple indicated on the map thus taking them deep into the jungles of the world. Once there, they lost another one of their compatriots named Flob who was killed by a living plant in the Jungle of Weeds. Fleeing for their lives, the three survivors accidentally fell through the ground and came upon the temple where they found an Orange Power Battery. It spoke to them and brought out feelings of greed in them where they began to fight over it. At that moment, the Guardians of the Universe arrived at the scene at the head of a group of Manhunters where they were seeking out the ones who had taken the box from Maltus. The power released was so overwhelming that it destroyed anyone around it including another member of Larfleeze's thieves guild. This left him and Blooch fighting over the prize whilst the Guardians were unable to stop them. Instead, they revealed that they had come for the box that contained the fear entity and they would allow one of the two thieves to claim the Orange Lantern so long as they confined their activities to the Vega system. Thus, Larfleeze gave them the box and killed Blooch thus becoming the new keeper of the Orange Lantern. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

However, only one of them could only possess the Orange Light which Larfleeze ultimately won. After this chain of events, the Guardians of the Universe buried the knowledge of the Orange Light from the Book of Oa. Thus, the origins of Larfleeze was never revealed to the Green Lantern Corps after the Manhunters were decommissioned. (Agent Orange: Part 3)

Many years ago, Okaara was visited by the entity called Blume who claimed to be a god of hunger and demanded the inhabitants of worlds an offering of their most precious items. On the planet, he made this proclamation again only to had confronted Larfleeze who asked the alien a similar question. He then used his powers to consume Blume and absorbed his identity whereupon the 'god of hunger' was replicated as a member of the Orange Lantern Corps. (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps v1 #2) Others came to fall this fate such as cleaner slug Glomulus who whilst in the jungles of Okaara got eaten by Blume and urned into another Orange Lantern. (Green Lantern v4 #40)

Broken Promises

Larfleeze angered at the Guardian's betrayal.

The pact remained in place for thousands of years until the 21st century until after the events of the Sinestro Corps War. Larfleeze had overlooked the trespasses into his domain by the Green Lantern Corps during the war with the Spider Guild and event their attempts to tracking down members of the Sinestro Corps that resided in the Vega System. However, the final straw was broken when the offshoot of the Oans called the Controllers came upon Larfleezes home in search for the Orange Light of Avarice in order to use it to make their own lantern corps. When they were about to claim the power battery during Larfleeze's feasting time, he became greatly angered and slaughtered the powerful immortals after which he took their souls. Feeling that the Guardian's had broken their promise, he became active and put his attention on making them pay. At the time, the Green Lantern Stel was chasing a Sinestro Corps member in the Vega System at which point Agent Orange summoned a mighty beast that devoured the Sinestro Corps Lantern and turned attacked Stel whereupon it tore off all his limbs as well as branded him with the Orange Light's symbol. His body was returned to Oa for the Guardians to examine at which a pillar of orange flames erupted with a construct of Larfleeze who spoke to the Guardian's. Agent Orange blamed them for the Controller's actions and made numerous demands of them at which point Scar blasted the construct. The Guardian's then amended the Book of Oa allowing for their next law to come into effect which was that the Vega system was no longer off limits to them. (Green Lantern v4 #40)

Confronting Hal Jordan for the Blue Ring.

Thus, Larfleeze's domain was attacked by the Guardians and a large number of Green Lanterns. Arriving on Okaara, they confronted Larfleeze who unleashed his Orange Lantern Corps against them which included all the souls he had taken which included the Controllers. During the confrontation, one of Larfleeze's constructs killed Gretti and took his soul making him an Orange Lantern. During the skirmish, Hal Jordan was separated from his colleagues and his Blue Lantern power ring was sensed by Larfleeze who became intoxicated by its presence. Unable to remove it, he inquired from Hal Jordan where he got it and demanded that he surrender it over to him immediately. This led to Hal Jordan getting captured and spirited away to another place within the temple whilst the Orange Lantern Corps battled Jordans fellow corpsmen. Agent Orange then spoke to Hal Jordan and showed his desire to obtain the blue ring as he had tasted many green rings as well as yellow but never had before seen a blue one. Curious as to what it contained, he learnt it was filled with the power of hope and believed that it was similar to his one orange light and that once he possessed it then his constant hunger would end. However, the ring spurred his advances as it declared that hope was selfless and the distraction allowed Hal Jordan to attack Larfleeze. Despite this advantage, the leader of the Orange Lantern Corps attacked with savagery and bit into Jordans arm. (Green Lantern v4 #40) Defeated, Larfleeze once again demanded the blue power ring but Hal Jordan asked his origins first before saying he would give it up. Thus, Agent Orange explained how billions of years ago he and his compatriots had discovered the Orange Light of Avarice, the pact that binded him to the Vega system and how the Guardians had covered it up like they had done to the Manhunters and Parallax. After finishing his tale, he once more demanded the power ring but Hal Jordan declared that he was unable to remove it. Angered, Larfleeze fashioned a blade construct from the orange light and severed Jordans ring arm whereupon he took the blue power ring which welcomed him into the Blue Lantern Corps. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

After removing the blue power ring, Larfleeze placed the ring onto his finger and was transformed into a Blue Lantern. His hunger was finally gone and he began to enjoy this new sensation until the blue light left him. At first confused, Larfleeze learnt from Hal Jordan that the blue power ring had in fact created an illusion of Larfleeze cutting off Jordan's hand as a defensive measure. An angry Agent Orange yelled at Jordan telling him that what he said was a lie and that the Green Lantern knew how to use the blue light with ease. It was then that Hal Jordan used his enhanced powers to create an army of constructs made up of facsimiles of the Green Lantern Corps; a concept that angered Larfleeze who told Jordan that he stole his idea. The battle raged between the two equally matched forces until Hal Jordan steals the Orange Lantern Power Battery when the rest of the Green Lantern Corps arrive which distracts Agent Orange. As the Orange Light of Avarice consumes the Green Lantern, Larfleeze in anger fights back and takes back the power battery whereupon he uses it to summon the rest of his corp into it whereupon he uses the power to grow in size. He was only stopped when Hal Jordan unlocked the power of the blue power ring which zapped Larfleeze back to normal after which the blue power ring departs from the Green Lantern, having completed its purpose. Despite his efforts, Agent Orange fails to capture the fleeing ring as the battle was now at an end. An angry and defiant Agent Orange was still ready to unleash the power of the orange light against the Guardians of the Universe, the latter of whom decide to allow Larfleeze to keep its power. Striking a deal with him once more, the Guardians listen to what Larfleeze's demands are who whispers it within their ears. Though not known to many, Larfleeze asked the Guardians for the location of the world which held the blue light of hope after which he departed. Later, he emerges at the planet Odym and unleashes his corps against the Blue Lantern Corps. (Green Lantern v4 #42)

Blackest Night

Remotely from Okaara, he came to direct his Orange Lanterns in an attack against Odym where they managed to nearly overwhelm the defending Blue Lanterns. Seeking to claim their Central Power Battery, Agent Orange nearly succeeded when the prophecy of the Blackest Night came to pass lead to black Power Rings being released into the cosmos. A large number of them came to Okaara to Larfleeze's lair where they began to reanimate the dead as members of the Black Lantern Corps with Agent Orange surrounded by these undead beings. (Green Lantern v4 #45) The Orange Lantern Corps meanwhile continued their siege of the Blue Lanterns to claim their Power Battery but their efforts were further hampered by the arrival of Hal Jorda, Carol Ferris, Sinestro and Indigo-1 on Odym. This combined with the Black Lanterns chasing him caused Larfleeze to lose control of his Orange Lanterns who faded away whilst he had to flee his lair on Okaara. He was only saved by the timely arrival of the Red Lantern Corps leader Atrocitus who demanded Agent Orange had over his Central Power Battery. (Green Lantern v4 #47) The two fought one another for the Orange Power Battery where Larfleeze managed to knock out Atrocitus after which his greed made him desire to claim a black Power Ring. He then dispatched his Orange Lanterns to claim it but they were unable to fight against the Black Lanterns leaving Larfleeze unable to fight his enemy. He was saved only by the arrival of members of the other Corps that arrived on Okaara along with Ganthet and Sayd. They attempted to convince the others that they should join forces in order to fight against the threat of the Black Lanterns though Larfleeze's greed simply led to him wanting more things for his collection with him then wanting a Guardian of his own. Sayd then offered herself to be his Guardian if he helped in stopping the Blackest Night with Larfleeze as a result agreeing to this alliance. (Green Lantern v4 #48)

At some point, he later returned to Okaara where he began scavenging for items to add to his hoard when he discovered a deactivated Brainiac 2.0. With his Power Ring, he reactivated the android that spoke of his collection with Agent Orange becoming interested in further items he could add to his own hoard. As a result, Brainiac 2.0 was reprogrammed to serve Larfleeze and designated him as the Grand Collector where he began shrinking various items into Bottles including worlds. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #11)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Larfleeze of Ogatoo was a thin alien creature with a long grey head which appeared feral and monstrous in form. Two long blade-like protrusions extended from his cheeks and his mouth was filled with razor sharp blades. He typically wore the orange uniform that was worn by his Corps. To the Guardians, he came to be known as Agent Orange on account of his placement in the Emotional Spectrum. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

Larfleeze was noted to be illiterate and had never learnt to read. (Green Lantern v4 #48)

After claiming the orange light, he claimed that everyone had tried to claim the power from him. (Green Lantern v4 #40) He claimed that he was always hungry and could not be sated. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

His mind was completely focused on the Orange Light of Avarice and sought to be the sole possessor of its power. He believed it was his alone and he grew increasingly agitated when someone attempted to take it away from him. In addition to this, he was known to be constantly hungry in the sense that he devoured everything be it food or power. This constant desire to have everything in his possession meant that he saw himself as the master of all things. Those thieves or fools that sought to steal from him paid the ultimate price by losing their lives and becoming servants of Larfleeze himself.

He personally believed that the blue light of hope was similar to the orange light. He also sought to acquire a blue power ring as he hoped its power would fill him to the point that he no longer hungered again. After briefly seemingly to possess it, he claimed that the hunger he felt in his stomach had been silenced for the first time since he had claimed the Orange Light of Avarice. (Green Lantern v4 #42)

The intrusions of the Controllers on his domain led him to be greatly angered and he felt that the Guardian's had broken their promise to him. As such, he sought to get revenge against them for their actions.

Larfleeze was said to be more psychotic than any other Power Ring wielder. Despite that being the case, it was claimed that he made sense in his own diseased, warped way. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #11) Though deranged with avarice, it was said that he was also wily and that he should not be underestimated. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #12)

Powers and abilities

Larfleeze constructs in Green Lantern v5 #22.

His sole possession of the Orange Light of Avarice gave Agent Orange a unique ability amongst the various corps of light. Larfleeze was capable of stealing the essence of his enemies that he kills and turning them into spectral Orange Lanterns that follow his will. This was accomplished through the hundreds of orange power rings that he kept safe and guarded. He had the power to draw all of the Orange Lanterns into his power battery and using that power to grow in size. By absorbing his Lantern Constructs, he was capable of boosting his power level to 7839%. It was noted that it was difficult to get the Orange Lantern Central Power Battery away from him as he had been with it so long that it was almost a part of him in a similar way that the Green Lantern Central Power Battery was part of the Guardians. [Green Lantern #42]

The fine control Agent Orange had over his constructs meant that he was capable of directing them across the vast regions of space without accompanying them. This allowed him to attack distant locations simply by concentrating his Orange Lanterns on a target. However, if he was distracted, than it was possible for him to loss concentration and his Orange Lantern constructs simply dissipated. [Green Lantern #47]

Outside of these abilities, Larfleeze was noted as being a vicious and almost feral fighter; not above to biting his opponents and ripping flesh from their bodies.

Whilst willpower constructs struggled against the Orange Lanterns, fear based attacks seemed to be more effective against them. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #12)

The Orange Lanterns were thus said to belong to him as a result with them all being identities that he had stolen where they were all fools or thieves that had crossed his path. As constructs, they faded in and out where they existed one moment and then did not in the next instance. (Green Lantern v4 #41)

Among the members of the Orange Lantern Corps included:

  • Blume : a large purple skinned being from Sector 2751 that appeared as a floating head who travelled from world to world across galaxies where he claimed to be a god of hunger that demanded inhabitants offer their most precious items to him until he encountered Larfleeze on Okaara who turned him into an Orange Lantern. (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps v1 #2)
  • Clypta :
  • Glomulus : a small purple skinned cleaner slug from the Pits of Poppo in Sector 2826 who had four arms where he lived under the care of the matron of a pub until he ate one of the guests who had attacked the owner. Glomulus then fled into the woods where he was eaten by Blume and then replicated as a Orange Lantern. (Green Lantern v4 #40)
  • Nat-Nat :
  • Tammal Tayn :
  • Warp Wrap :

He often kept the Power Battery close to him where it was constantly charging his ring. An aspect of it was that it created intense feelings of greed in its user and making them desire it. The source of its power was the orange light of the Emotional Spectrum that would burn so long as avarice existed in the universe. Larfleeze had held the Power Battery for centuries and was said to be as attached to it as the Guardians were to their own. In contrast to the Oans, Larfleeze had said that he had hoarded his power over eons whereas the Guardians had distributed the power away which he claimed meant he was stronger than them. Agent Orange could draw in all the power into himself creating an 'emotional detonation' whereby he could turn into a giant construct of himself. In this form, he was shown to be far more powerful than in his ordinary state. (Green Lantern v4 #42)
