Young Billy's father, Stan, catches him reading an issue of Creepshow, a Tales From the Crypt-ish comic book. Stan is one of those really strict, old-fashioned fathers who doesn't want his son reading this "trash," so he takes the comic away and throws it in the garbage. But for our benefit, and Billy's, the Creep himself arrives at Billy's bedroom window and a gust of wind blows the comic out of the garbage can and onto the lawn, and subsequent gusts of wind turn the pages and introduce us to five short stories: "Father's Day," "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verril," "Something to Tide You Over," "The Crate," and "They're Creeping Up On You!" - All shown live, of course - it'd be pretty boring if we just saw the comic pages.

The film was a highly successful tribute to the old EC horror comics, directed by Night of The Living Dead's George A. Romero, written by Stephen King (who also appeared in the film as Jordy Verril), with special effects by Tom Savini (who also had a small role as a garbageman). "Father's Day," "Something to Tide You Over," and "They're Creeping Up On You!" were all written by King for the movie, while "The Crate" was adapted from the short story of the same name and "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verril" from the unpublished story "Weeds."

A sequel, Creepshow 2, was also released.
