Biography

Dragon Ball Z

Vegeta (Japanese: ベジータ, Hepburn: Bejīta) (732- May 7, 774; May 8, 774 - ?) was the prince of the Saiyan race, the son of King Vegeta and one of the only Saiyans to survive the destruction of Planet Vegeta. He has peculiar hair that grows almost straight up and a large widow’s peak. Vegeta’s attitude is generally one of great confidence.

From the start, all knew Vegeta was destined for greatness. As a child, his power level exceeded that of even his father’s. At some point, the Saiyan race came to be subjects of King Cold who later gave them to his son Frieza. This saw them being incorporated into the Frieza Force where they helped clear out worlds that were then sold to clients.

In his youth, he once came to see his father being stepped on by the God of Destruction Beerus.

Later on, Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza after he came to see the Saiyans as a threat to his rule. It was later claimed that the Saiyan homeworld was destroyed by a rogue comet crashing onto it though Vegeta was aware of the truth and was off-planet with Nappa at the time. He along with Nappa and Raditz were among the few surviving Saiyans that Frieza had kept alive. In this time, Vegeta was noted to had competed against his bitter rival Cui. At first, the young Saiyan Prince resented Frieza but after a demonstration of his power he decided to wait until he was stronger before challenging him. Later on, he received a report from a dying Raditz's Scouter about a world called Planet Earth that possessed Dragon Balls that could grant the user any wish. This saw him and Nappa travelling to the planet in order to use the Dragon Balls to make themselves immortal. Arriving on Earth, the two Saiyans easily overcame the planet's meagre military until they were confronted by the Z Warriors. Despite their skill, the human fighters were unable to match the Saiyans where many of them were killed or beaten by Nappa alone. It was then that the humans stated that they had a great fighter among them named Goku who was actually a Saiyan named Kakarot. Vegeta came to be intrigued at this and entertained the humans by waiting for their hero who managed to arrive at the scene. Using his Scouter, Vegeta believed that Kakarot was no threat and had Nappa fight but to their surprise Goku came to easily defeat his Saiyan opponent.

He killed Nappa for his failure to defeat Goku, and battled Goku himself.

After giving Krillin and Gohan Senzu Beans, which fully recovers their strength, Goku tells Gohan and Krillin to leave Vegeta to him and requests to Vegeta to fight somewhere else. Vegeta eventually agrees, and they leave the battlefield. At Gizard Wasteland, Vegeta offers Goku a chance to join him, but Goku quickly turns down the offer as he already has everything he wanted, completely disagrees with Vegeta's selfish intentions, and has already seen how Vegeta treats his partners. Vegeta and Goku continue discussing who is truly right, with Vegeta stating that even Goku's multiplying Kaio-ken technique will not reach his elite rank power level, with Goku replying by stating if someone struggles hard enough, a low-class can reach the rank of an elite warrior. Their fight now begins, and it is made clear that Vegeta is much stronger than the much-improved Goku. Even using Kaio-ken, it was not enough to stop Vegeta. Thus, Goku had to push the multiplier of the technique even higher, ignoring King Kai's warnings. With this power, Goku was able to fight Vegeta on equal ground to an extent, and the prince of Saiyans lost his temper and decided he would destroy the planet with his Galick Gun technique and go find the Dragon Balls on Namek instead. However, Goku countered the Galick Gun with a Kamehameha, and the two struggled for several minutes. When it seemed, Vegeta was gaining the upper hand, Goku finally pushed himself to unforeseen levels and used Kaio-ken times four to boost his power even higher, in turn surprising and overwhelming Vegeta and sending him skywards. Vegeta managed to survive the beam carrying him ever higher. Thus, Vegeta decided to transform himself into a Great Ape, which would multiply his power tenfold, throwing a Power Ball into the air, as Piccolo destroyed the moon a couple of months before. When Vegeta transformed, Goku was completely outclassed and had to resort to using the Spirit Bomb technique. However, before he could use it, Vegeta disrupted it with a Chou Makouhou. Then Vegeta grabbed Goku and began to slowly crush him, making him suffer instead of killing him quickly. Krillin and Gohan had seen the Power Ball that Vegeta had used to transform and had returned to the battle. Upon finding Goku defeated, they attempted to distract Vegeta and cut off his tail, in order to force him back to his normal form. This attempt failed, but Yajirobe succeeded where the strong Z Fighters had not. When he was back to normal, Vegeta became enraged and fought Gohan briefly. Despite Gohan's efforts, Vegeta proved to be far stronger and faster than the boy. Goku then decides to give Krillin the last of the Spirit Bomb he managed to retain. Krillin accepted this new energy and was instructed by Goku how to unleash it on Vegeta.

Panicking at first, Krillin receives further instructions from North Kai, and he hurls the Spirit Bomb at Vegeta. When Yajirobe shouted at Krillin to throw it, making Vegeta notice him, Krillin throws it, and at first it missed, but Gohan was pure enough that he could bounce the energy back, striking Vegeta. The Spirit Bomb hit him and severely damaged him, reducing his energy and strength greatly; but he survived. Vegeta then draws upon his Ki reserves and unleashes a mighty blast that strikes down everyone nearby. Vegeta notices that Gohan has regrown his tail from the effects of the Power Ball and realizes that he may soon transform. The villain is unable to prevent this thanks to Yajirobe distracting him with an attack from behind. Realizing his mistake, Vegeta quickly returns to Gohan, but was too late. Gohan assumes the Great Ape form, and Vegeta in his severely weakened state could not defeat him. However, Vegeta could out-think the primitive ape form of Gohan, and manages to cut off Gohan's tail, returning the young half-breed to normal size and power. Before Gohan could fully return to normal, however, he fell on Vegeta as a Great Ape, and Vegeta was unable to dodge in his wounded state. Vegeta finally retreats, and crawls to his space pod, realizing he cannot keep fighting in his current condition. A weakened Krillin gains consciousness, and just when he is about to stab Vegeta with Yajirobe's katana sword, Goku telepathically pleaded for Krillin to let Vegeta go, wanting to have a rematch one day and also wanting Vegeta to have the same chance to change his ways that Piccolo got; after much persuasion, Krillin agrees. Vegeta then departs Earth, vowing to make Goku regret sparing him, and his space pod takes him to one of the planets controlled by Frieza. With his extreme arrogance he cannot understand how a "Low-Class" Saiyan like Goku could have done so well against him, unwilling to factor the contributions of the other three warriors into the battle.

Despite the close calls, the fight ended in a tie and the two Saiyans separated to recover. Vegeta headed for Planet Namek to collect the Namek Dragon Balls, only to find that Frieza had already obtained most of them. Vegeta gleefully murdered Cui when his old enemy followed him there in an attempt to stop him, and also brought about the deaths of Frieza’s top men Dodoria and Zarbon - although not without a sound beating from the latter.

Vegeta temporarily allied himself with Krillin and Gohan when the group battled the Ginyu Force. He rescued them both from the time tricks and mental binds of Guldo, and they returned the favor by saving him from the brutal Recoome. Goku surprised everyone upon his arrival to Namek by giving the Saiyan prince a Senzu Beans. After Goku finally defeated all of the Ginyu Force, he was badly hurt after the ordeal. Knowing he’d need the more powerful Saiyan as his ally when the final battle against Frieza came, Vegeta helped Goku by giving him access to the rejuvenation tank in Frieza’s ship. Vegeta nearly achieved Super Saiyan while fighting Frieza, but never quite reached it.

Frieza beat him to a bloody pulp until Goku arrived, but Frieza fired one last fatal shot at Vegeta, killing him. As he lay dying, Vegeta revealed the secrets of his past and what Frieza had done to his family, the royal line and the Saiyan race. Because of this speech, Goku changes and becomes extremely angry with Frieza.

A short time later, Vegeta appeared to Goku in a vision and retold the tragic tale of the Saiyan race and their great loss all because of Frieza. This speech inspired Goku to take revenge on Frieza for all the pain and suffering he caused. Vegeta was revived with the Earth Dragon Balls, and just before he was transported to Earth with a wish from the Namek Dragon Balls, he managed to find Goku and Frieza. He commended Goku on his transformation as a Super Saiyan and caused Frieza to totally freak out when he saw Vegeta, as Frieza knew full well that he had killed the Saiyan prince several hours before.

Vegeta came to accept his situation on Earth and lived at Capsule Corporation for a time, while waiting for Goku to come back. It is at this point he became more acquainted with Bulma and her family. About this time, it had also become clear to most that Vegeta was more a neutral ally to the general cause. When Goku did not return, Vegeta angrily took a Capsule Corp. ship and left Earth to search for him. He returned in time for the first appearance of Trunks, and a few years later left again to train out in space alone, where he eventually turned Super Saiyan in a rage during a heavy meteor shower on a small planet, which could have killed him at any time. His total frustration that two Super Saiyans could exist (where it was previously thought that there was only one legendary Super Saiyan) and that he was not one of them threw Vegeta into a rage, and he trained furiously at the thought that he was a failure to his father and the Saiyan race because of his weakness.

During the three years of peace after the future Trunks left, Vegeta and Bulma had their son named Trunks. Vegeta trained alone with the future Trunks for a year inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber (Room of Spirit and Time), where both reached the Ultimate Super Saiyan stage. Vegeta was full of pride and expected a lot of his son, but did not seem to care very much about him. However, when Cell killed Trunks near the end of the Cell Games, Vegeta lost all control and flew at Cell, attacking him with a furious barrage of punches and kicks with such energy as he never had before. While Gohan and Cell were wrestling with the two biggest Kamehamehas ever formed in a final bout of power, Vegeta tactfully positions himself behind Cell and fired a Final Flash at his back. A surprised Cell lost his concentration as a result, so that Gohan’s Kamehameha overwhelmed him and literally destroys Cell down to every last particle.

Vegeta and Bulma do in fact get married (apparently sometime between the Cell Saga and the Buu Saga; although it is never shown nor the exact date revealed, the event is mentioned in the Japanese version later in the series). Vegeta is tough on his son, but he really cares about him and Bulma. By the time of Majin Buu's appearance, Vegeta appeared to have calmed down some, but in reality he only looked that way because Goku has been away training in the Other World for about seven years.

When Goku returned, tempers flare, and Vegeta’s jealous anger rose so high that Dabura, sensing his potential, advised Babidi to possess Vegeta and take over his mind. Babidi did so, causing Vegeta to become Majin Vegeta. His mind turned to evil and his power level increased greatly, Vegeta reached Super Saiyan 2. He resisted most of Babidi’s attempts to control his mind, although he does allow the evil to control his actions. To get Goku to fight him, he blew up an entire section of the stadium (including spectators) at the 25th Tenkaichi Budoukai. The resulting battle between Goku and Vegeta appeared to be another tie, but while Goku was distracted, Vegeta knocked him out and put off their fight to face Buu.

At this point, Vegeta appeared to have returned to his evil ways, he was really not so hardened deep down. Vegeta proved this when he met Fat Buu for the first time, and immediately vowed to avenge Gohan’s apparent “death” at Buu’s hands (although he is actually quite alive, his power level drops so low that he is assumed dead). He fought with Buu for a while, only to find that he was overpowered at every turn.

Knowing full well that Buu was capable of killing his son, his wife, and everyone he cared about, he made the grim but courageous decision to act as a kamikaze force in attempt to destroy Buu once and for all. Piccolo informed Vegeta that despite the manner of his death and any of his recent accomplishments in life, the millions and perhaps billions of deaths he caused in his youth during his planet-clearing days working for Frieza would override everything, and he would almost certainly go to Hell (HFIL). Even with this knowledge, Vegeta made up his mind to do whatever it takes to save his family and those he cares for. Trunks tried to stop him, and Vegeta hugged him one last time before he knocked him out and used Ultimate Final Skill to explode all of his life energy into one great bomb, making the ultimate sacrifice for Earth.

Despite Vegeta's attempts, Buu survived, and Vegeta apparently (according to Piccolo) went to Hell. He returned later with the aid of Baba and special permission granted from King Yemma to help Goku save Earth. Vegeta made the difficult decision to fuse permanently with Goku into Vegetto to defeat Buu (though they defused a bit later anyway due to special circumstances). At this point Vegeta was finally coming to terms with the fact that Goku was indeed more powerful than he, and during the fight between Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Buu, Vegeta admitted that Goku was the strongest Saiyan in the universe. He was resurrected by the Dragon Balls along with everyone else destroyed by Buu, including the entire population of Earth. Vegeta even tried to talk the people of Earth into giving up their energy for Goku’s Genki-Dama (Spirit Bomb), but Satan, Mr. proved to be much better at it, due to his supreme popularity as the World Champion.

Dragon Ball Super

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Vegeta was a slim yet very well-built man of a below-average stature where he stood at 164 centimeters tall. His hair was black and had spikes upwards with Vegeta having a prominent widow's peak. Like most Saiyans, he possessed defined eyes with a consistently stern look to them. He was actually known as Vegeta IV (ベジータ四世, Bejīta Yonsei) but his status as the son of the king led to him being formally referred to as Prince Vegeta (ベジータ王子, Bejīta Ōji).

He was shown as being somewhat cocky, very proud and self-righteous.

Originally, Vegeta was shown as being a cold and ruthless warrior that lived through his strength alone. He was uninhibited by emotions and had a quest for attaining greatness.

After having a family on Earth, Vegeta began to fear that he had grown weak as a result of his time on the planet. He felt that his quest for greatness had gradually given way to a life of mediocrity when he settled down, formed a family and had even grown quite fond of them. He even came to consider Planet Earth as being a nice place to live. It was this that led to him falling to temptation at the hands of Babidi who offered him greater power through his sorcery. Vegeta came to desire to reawaken the evil in his heart and a return to his old self who he thought as the perfect warrior that was cold and ruthless.

From his youth, he came to fear the God of Destruction Beerus and knew of his power.

Vegeta had nothing but hatred for Frieza for his treatment of his kind and the destruction of his world.

It was shown that originally he had no loyalties to his compatriots with this being shown when he killed his fellow teammate Nappa for losing against Kakarot.

During his first fight against Goku, he was forced to consider transforming into the Great Ape with him loath to do so as such forms only used to devastate a planet and he hated having to use it to defeat a single opponent. Another peculiar thing about Vegeta is that he never once calls Goku by his Earth-given name, but only his Saiyan name - Kakarot. At first Goku dislikes this, but he grows used to it as time passes and he learns more about Vegeta’s reasoning. For most of the series, Vegeta is bent on becoming stronger than Goku. He becomes obsessed with the idea of one day defeating Kakarot in battle, and this remains his one desire for a very long while.

Vegeta was the son of King Vegeta (ベジータ王 Bejīta-ō) who was the ruler of their home planet.

On Planet Earth, he came to be involved with Bulma (ブルマ Buruma) who became his wife. She became pregnant with his children where they would have an eldest son named Trunks (トランクス Torankusu) and their youngest child was a daughter they named Bulla (ブラ Bura).

Powers and abilities

As a Saiyan, Vegeta was born with skills far above a normal human where he had a range of fighting skills and had the ability to manipulate ki. This gave him the ability to achieve a variety of feats including increased speed, strength, endurance, flight and channel it into energy blasts. Due to being a Saiaym, he grew stronger every time he fought and survived a fight. When he first arrived on Earth, he was noted to had reached a power level of 18,000. In order to improve himself, he began to train himself under intense levels of gravity that was far greater than that of Earth. Over time, he came to be one of the most powerful mortal warriors in the Universe 7.

He developed a range of techniques that included:

  • Galick Gun (ギャリック砲 Gyarikku Hō) : an energy wave attack that was a signature move of Vegeta’s.
  • Big Bang Attack (ビッグバンアタック Biggu Ban Atakku) : an energy sphere attack technique developed by Vegeta.
  • Final Flash (ファイナルフラッシュ Fainaru Furasshu) : a new energy wave attack that was developed by Vegeta.
  • Final Impact (ファイナルインパクト Fainaru Inpakuto) : also known as the Atomic Flash (アトミックフラッシュ), this was a move Vegeta used after being magically enhanced by Babidi.

Originally, Vegeta possessed a tail that was inherent with Saiyans that allowed him to transform into a Great Ape (大おお猿ざる Ōzaru, lit. "Great Monkey"). Underneath a moon, he transformed into a giant ape that increased his size and power. In reality, it was not the moon itself that triggered the transformation but rather the emission of Blutz Waves (ブルーツ波 Burūtsu-ha, lit. "Bruits Waves"). The Saiyans came to realise that certain worlds lacked a moon that deprived them of the ability to transform into the Great Ape form and they learnt to create an energy ball that emitted the waves. Once transformed, he gained incredible levels of strength and power in his giant form where he stated that this was strong enough to destroy an entire world.

Under his own intense training, he gained the ability to transform into the legendary Super Saiyan (超スーパーサイヤ人じん; Sūpā Saiya-jin). He initially attained this form during his time training at 300x gravity in the gravity chamber. After his defeat at the hands of the Androids, Vegeta decided to undergo further training in the harsh conditions in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber alongside Future Trunks. This led to him attaining a second grade state of a Super Saiyan where he was much stronger with his muscles being even larger than before. In this form, he was able to easily best Semi-Perfect Cell though it was shown that he was no match for Perfect Cell using his full power.

Through training under Whis, he came to transform into a more powerful state called Super Saiyan Blue (超サイヤ人ブルー Sūpā Saiya-jin Burū).

Through Fusion (合体 Gattai, lit. "Union"), he was able to achieve another form by merging with Goku. Initially, this was achieved by using the Potara (ポタラ Potara) earrings where their fusion form was Vegito (ベジット Bejitto) who had both Vegeta and Goku's strengths making him incredibly form. An alternative merged form was achieved by taking part in the Fusion Dance (フュージョン Fyūjon) that resulted in them becoming Gogeta (ゴジータ Gojīta) who was also an immensely powerful fighter.

As part of the Frieza Force, he once made use of a Scouter (スカウター Sukautā) that was able to scan for power levels in his foes. However, he later came to learn sense energy levels and no longer had a need for the device. He also came to use Battle Armor (戦闘ジャケット Sentō Jaketto, lit. "Battle Jacket") that he wore as a form of protection in battle. In the past, he made use of an Attack Ball (アタックボール Atakku Bōru) that was a small spherical craft capable of interstellar flight. He along with other Saiyans had used these to travel between worlds where they could only seat a single occupant.

Alternate Versions

  • In Dragon Ball GT, Vegeta appeared in the setting where after the Buu Saga he and Bulma had another child, this time a daughter named Bulla. He became quite fond of his daughter and was extremely protective of her. After Goku was transformed into a child by the Black Star Dragon Balls, Vegeta was possessed by Baby, and battled Goku on his return to Earth. After being freed from Baby's control, Vegeta later helped battle Super 17 and (as a Super Saiyan 4, alongside Goku) Ii-Shenron. Bitter enemies from their first meeting, Goku and Vegeta proved to be practically best friends in the end.
